• TransLink operating cost in 2005 was $724,788,000. Transit fares cover $285,520,000. The rest is subsidy from fuel taxes which cover $254,628,000 and property taxes which cover $216,824,000. Note that fares cover less than 40% of the operating costs and none of the fixed costs. | Quote:

ok, so whats your point? EVERY public transit system in the world is run on subsidies. its provided as a service to the public, not as a profit maximizing venture.
the issue here is that translink isn't using the money efficiently. don't give them excuses to be complacent.

Vancouver has a population of, what, 2.5 million in the Lower Mainland and over 6000 square miles to cover, whereas Hong Kong itself has a population just shy of 7 million people and an area of just over 400 square miles.
Now think why comparing these two wont work.
Even if you use just Metro Vancouver with it's 2 million residents and 1100 square miles, you can still see why it wont work.

I actually have no problem with having to carry a prepaid card to use the skytrain if that means improving the transit system a good amount!! | Our governments are so shitty that changes their mind every couple years. Classic example is that the two B-line lanes being built in the middle of No. 3 Road few years ago. Our government spends millions to make that express B-line and DOESN'T EVEN WORK!
Richmond should had that Skytrain expansion long long long time ago.
But transit services are so unreliable that I will never consider taking it unless my car get stuck in the snow.
One thing I really want to rant is that transit-users complaining their bus fare is too much. Considering that non-transit taxpayers are paying part of the system and their usage already.
If they think bus fare is too expensive, try paying a car and insurance.
Geeezzzz.

Geeezzzz. | I can't entirely disagree with that part. Especially with the most recent fare increase. The price of my buspass went up $5, whereas a single ticket went up like $.50. The lameass "Bus Riders' union" (WTF is that?) complained that the increase was too steep for 'regular transit users', despite the fact that we also get 15% back from our bus passes with a tax return.

the issue here is that translink isn't using the money efficiently. don't give them excuses to be complacent. | Well, the HK one makes money. That's why it's good. And every good one the world isn't a sink hole for cash.
Why?
1) Large volume of riders to offset the huge one-time capital costs of building it.
2) High density and efficient city layout (read: packed in like sardines) to keep subsidies/trip down.
Why does ours suck?
1) Small population
2) We have roads so most people drive.
3) Low density
(1 + 2) + 3 = Low volume + high costs = $ sink hole.
My point?
Money makes the world go..
If you're not going DT, buy a car.
If you are going DT, move near a Skytrain station or buy a car.
Our system will be good when more we get more density around new train/subway type lines (I believe that's how Toronto grew). But to take advantage of it, you'll have to live near a station (likely in a shoebox apt) and want to go where it takes you. At this stage, traffic will be so congested, more ppl will think twice about driving. If you want to live in a big house with nothing around you, then service will always suck cuz no one will pay for empty buses to nowhere.

I hope they cancel school for SFU. I am still in Asia right now and wont be back until the 11th. They screwed me over by canceling my final on the 17th as well. Well, the snow did.
goo3, you are right about the first week being meaningless, but that is usually first and 2nd level courses. Usually for 300 and 400 they start pretty damn quick.
