Taxi Cabs

Is it true that taxi drivers jack up the price when you're taking a cab? For instance, when it was snowing and the roads were shitty, would they have increased the price? just wondering..

muteki 12-28-2008 03:12 AM

it's always the same to me =/

JHuJHu 12-28-2008 03:18 AM

^ me too

no difference to me ...

Taxi's in vancouver (and most big cities) have a lot of rules that they have to follow, and they can't just set any ridiculous rate they want.

They are supposed to display the initial flat rate ($2.50, I think) and the hourly/distance rate as well. The trip-computer calculates this based on how far you go and how long you sit.

There is probably a website that details all the rules they have to follow, I don't know all of them, but I have had to call in taxi drivers to Yellow Cab/Black Top/Vancouver Taxi management for misbehaving in front of customers. (fighting over a fare, yelling at each other, etc etc) They are supposed to get suspended if they have enough complaints against them.

the only way i've experienced them trying to jack up the price is to take roads that they know take longer or are busier thus increasing the time to reach to your destination. I've had it happened only twice where i wondered why the cab took a longer road to reach my house (could've been that he was not familiar with the area). But most cabs i've been on in Vancouver drive very fast and run yellows. its more evident in HK though where they will take longer roads.

rubencruz 12-28-2008 10:50 AM

i heard they like shorter trips due to increase in tips then longer trips wich is less tips per hr

racerman88 12-28-2008 10:55 AM

must follow guidelines

lilaznviper 12-28-2008 11:09 AM

some cab drivers think they are the king
i remember when the gas was 107.9 and it was cheap everyone was lining up for gas then this cab driver just goes the other way around and budge infront of everyone really pissing

tonyvu 12-28-2008 06:23 PM

LOL in vietnam if your a tourist and you don't know what's up, the taxi drivers jack up the price like krazieee.

well, i remember one time i took the cab when we were all drunk and one of my friend's was puking in a plastic bag, the cab driver told one of my friends who was sober to go buy an air refreshener at a gas station. is that fucking right? i mean no puke was in the car or anything

hongy 12-28-2008 10:29 PM

^^ that doesn't seem right.

To answer your question, no they can't. I have had a few taxis try to take a longer route forcing me to pay more. I've also had a few nice cab drivers who only asked for 10$ on a trip that came to 13.XX.

tough 12-29-2008 12:08 AM

it seems to me there was a bag of puke in the car. i don't think asking you guys to buy an air fresher is that big of a deal.

ghosty 12-29-2008 01:36 AM

the jack up the price when your drunk!!

absolution 12-29-2008 10:38 AM

You can always make set a price before taking a cab.

El Bastardo 12-29-2008 10:43 AM

I once had a guy who I asked to take me to my destination snake around a few blocks because he thought I was a tourist. He was intentionally jacking up the fare and I just left his cab after throwing a $5 bill at him. I knew exactly what he was doing and I wasn't going to be his chump.

Same with London's mini cabs (not the black cabs). Some years ago on New Years my buddy and I were charged 30 pounds to go 8 blocks in 5 minutes. Thats about $65 CDN.

You better know where you're heading. Take Mai Linh, they're like the only ones that don't try to scam you.

I was shitfaced comming out of the casino in richmond. Got in the first cab i could see and he told me $100 cash only for burnaby. I told him i would pay by credit card but he didn't like that and said cash only. So i called him a faggot and got out of his cab, luckily another cab just pulled up and it cost $35 and i gave him a $20 tip because of the other guy.
