Walk away and go home and think about it first before buying it on the spot. That way if you really do want it you have to make the effort to go to the store again to buy it.
Take note that everything always look better in the store/online etc.

Go look for that thing you see online and see if you can find a better deal in shops before you buy it. Always make yourself do more work before buying something...then you'll know if you really do want it/need it.

Also ask yourself if you deserve to have some luxury if you're gonna buy something useless just because you want it. Like if you studied really hard for a test and got a good mark...then it's ok to spoil yourself a little...but if you haven't really done anything lately....maybe think about doing something productive before buying something useless.

Yep, that works. Back in the day, it was sobering when I realized how many hours of minimum wage it took to buy my stereo - mind you it was a sweet purchase because I researched the shit out of it, saved for it and knew that I worked damn hard for it.

It's only $500, I'll make that back in two weeks, but during the two weeks I can enjoy using this thing and be a somewhat happier person.
Not an insult: reevaluate what makes you happy. Stuff shouldn't be the source of happiness - doubly so if it's only somewhat happier.

To the original poster - just walk away from something before you pull the trigger. Do things with your time that don't take money, or don't take much money - exercise, study, work, hell, replace your urge to spend by jerking off. Spending money should be a means to an end and not so much a means to pleasure unto itself.

Im like the total opposite. I barely buy things, and if I really want something, I will wait to find a better deal which I usually don't but then I don't end up buying the original thing I want.

I have enough of what I want already. Helps saves money

For you impulse buyers with serious problems, I'll sell you my tips and tricks!

i always ask myself "do i really NEED it"

I bought alot of camera gears they really suit my needs. However I didnt buy a 32" LCD i always wanted becasue my 17" LCD still works fine, for watching tv. I use my 22" monitor for video games.
