Umm how short? We could help better with pics. Also, if it's pretty short (2" or less) then there's no point in using hair wax, in my opinion. Most of the wax/clay products recommended in this thread are a pain in the ass to wash out.

I suggest Redken 06 Rewind for short hair.

Also, I agree with Eff-1, a good stylist knows how to give your hair the shape it needs to look good without excessive amounts of product.

^ Yeah Air Rise is too weak for his hair. That and he's doing it wrong... one hand, three fingers, doesn't work that shit into his hair. And his hair is shit anyways.

Umm, can't you buy Sebastian Xtah Crude Clay for like $20 or so at Megahair/Zennkai Salon?

Also, what I'm using right now is KMS Hair Play paste, but it's definitely not for the crazier hair styles.

Use this:
D:Struct by D:Fi.
It is awesome, very flexible hold, and is not like gel, where it is super stiff. It also smells great, like pineapple, and not to girly. I like the messy look, so I just rub some of this in my palms, and rub it in all my hair, and just mess it up.

EDIT: I also have htis one, but it is a pomade, and is more shiny, but still flexible. I dont like it as much because it doesnt smell good, its more stale smelling.

D:fi <------ is the one i am using now, it is spectacular, holds well , easy to move/remove and smells of pineapple.

Got it as a present from a friend who just happens to be a hairstylist.

Gatsby has a wax for short hair. It's in a small dark grey round container. It holds really well.. and i definately recommend it.
