Zim's New 100 Trillion Dollar Note

Last week the country's central bank began circulating Z$10, Z$20 and Z$50 billion notes - but they are no longer sufficient.

A political deadlock between President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai over power-sharing has done little to help Zimbabwe's failing economy.

The country is also in the grip of a cholera epidemic with food and petrol prices doubling every day.

Zimbabweans often have to line up for hours outside banks to withdraw barely enough cash to buy a loaf of bread.

An official estimate put inflation at 231,000,000% in July - but some experts now believe it is much higher.

In addition to the Z$100 trillion note, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe plans to launch Z$10 trillion, Z$20 trillion and Z$50 trillion notes, the Herald newspaper reported.

They've gotta get Mugabe out of there! He's single handedly managed to screw up the entire country. I feel so sorry for the regular citizens over there.

from the shangri la hotel website, it says approx $400 US per night for one room.

If $1US = 13 Quadrillion Zim (at one point it did, can't tell if it still does)

About 5 quintillion dollars

InvisibleSoul 01-18-2009 11:57 PM

Son of a... I thought this was old news at first, because the first sentence in that story is wrong... it should say "trillion", not "billion"...

Haha I had to google to see how many zero's a "quintillion" had. It has 18 if anyone else is curious :D.

Ferra 01-19-2009 06:53 AM

why are the people still using the z$ money??
If you have a currency that is expected to lose 50% of its value EVERY DAY, would you still hold it?

I mean, I would much rather resort to the barter system of trade, or better yet, just trade in a different currency like USD. (I thought it is common for african/middle east countries to trade in USD?)
