it's like canon OH NOES WE ARE LAYING PEOPLE OFF WE ONLY PROFITED 3.48 BILLION FOR 2008

if they were still pulling in a profit, they wouldn't be closing all these stores and firing employees. any idea how much money, time and energy was just wasted with the costs of building these stores, training employees etc required?

and seriously? give me a piece of a company that PROFITS3.48 billion a year. pretty sure you're talking about revenue. a high revenue isn't as great when your expenses are really high as well.

fyi, in the last quarter for 2008, starbucks reported 65.8 million in net income. drop from 208 million during the same quarter a year ago.

9c/share? hmm... it's time to buy some starbucks shares. it won't take long until people start migrating back to their addiction.

Gridlock 01-31-2009 10:08 PM

I was working on Homer Street in the summer and craved a coffee. The Starbucks was lined up out the door. I walked around the corner and went to a privately owned coffee shop for my vanilla latte fix. I saved a dollar and it was the best latte I've ever had. I asked him why Starbucks would take me 15 minutes and taste like shit.

His answer? They are only used to going there.

It's the crepe place across from the library on Robson. Their crepes are fantastic too(needs a little work on presentation).

$9/share. At 9 cents they're nailing the doors shut.

an americano is worth the extra 50c when compared to "timmy's". god, i'd rather drink instant than that dog water they call coffee.
haven't tried mcdonald's. but if the quality of their fine establishment serves as testament, i'm sure the price wouldn't surprise me

It's not as easy to make a Earls quality dinner at home. (Unless you really know how to COOK).

The other difference, humans HAVE to eat. They don't HAVE to drink coffee.

Earls food SUCKS. Most of the food is prepped and cooked by teenagers so I dont think it would be that hard to make the food. If you had the recipe you could replicated it perfectly

Pocakj 02-01-2009 02:04 AM

hella expensive but good coffee nonetheless, sucks for those who are going to get laid off =(

AzNightmare 02-01-2009 02:19 AM

Yeah, well I get Van Houtte coffee for free at work.
5-6 different flavours. Now that's more like it.

all key figures in their annual reports are listened in here, the listed net income/profit is far below from the couple billion you posted

For people like single parents who were unable to acquire an education, Starbucks is an amazing chance. Extensive medical and dental benefits as well as stock options and RRSPs available after 3 months. Add to that, if you're low-income, Starbucks will pay your MSPs for you. I'm guessing benefits there are roughly the same as here; so while it's not really an involved career, it definitely tops Blenz or other coffee shops you might be able to find a job at subsequently.

Yeah, I know a single mother that's new(er) to the country and Starbucks gave her a decent job. She's supporting a whole family on the income, barely.

I think a lot of people knew they weren't doing well when they announced in the summer that they were closing stores. The architecture firm I worked for completed a shopping centre in Tukwila, near Southcentre Mall and the Starbucks there closed after a month. That pretty much told me something was up.

Yeah, one of my former coworkers moved up to Assistant Store Manager after a year and Store Manager 6 months after that. She'd been waitressing for years, had an 8-year old son, and wanted to be able to provide something better for him and not keep living cheque-to-cheque. They started her from her first day laying the groundwork with goals she'd have to hit to get to the positions she wanted, and lo and behold, she got there.

I don't drink coffee too often but I prefer tim hortons because they have more choices for snacks.

You need to reread his original post, very very very carefully.

Because they should be making more. If your annual income dropped by 33%, wouldn't you cut back?

If you're referring to caffeine content, then a latte has less than a similarly sized brewed coffee Or do you believe this to be a milk issue?

Sorry to not clarify - I was referring to the milk. Lattes should be enjoyed with whole milk, but of course, people get around this by having skim which kinda defeats the purpose.
