Starbucks not doing so well

All it did was take a bit of a financial crisis to get people to realise that their $5.00 coffee every day is probably the most frivolous wastes of money.

"Starbucks profit falls 69 per cent, cutting jobs
Updated: Wed Jan. 28 2009 13:43:36

The Associated Press

SEATTLE — Starbucks is reporting that its profit dropped 69 per cent in its first quarter and it plans to close more stores and cut more jobs.

The company says it will close 300 underperforming stores in addition to the 600 it already planned to close in the U.S.

The closures could result in the loss of 6,000 jobs. Starbucks will also lay off about 700 non-store employees.

The Seattle-based retailer said Wednesday that its net income fell to $64.3 million, or nine cents per share, from $208.1 million, or 28 cents per share a year earlier.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected quarterly earnings of 17 cents per share.

Revenue fell to $2.62 billion from $2.77 billion, while analysts had predicted revenue of $2.70 billion.

starbucks is good and all, but it is expensive..

Harvey Specter 01-28-2009 02:55 PM

Starbucks is way too expensive because Mc D's is doing very well, 80% increase from last year because people are cutting back and eating cheaper foods. Only downside is we're going to have to deal with massive health problems 5-10 years down the road because of people going back to eating cheap, unhealthy crap.

How is coffee at McDonalds less healthy than coffee at Starbucks?

Harvey Specter 01-28-2009 03:00 PM

No, I’m talking in general that the trend is shifting to cheaper fast food restaurants.

Mr.HappySilp 01-28-2009 03:01 PM

Actually I started drinking starbucks 2 weeks ago. In order to stay awake for my work I need the energy boost.

q0192837465 01-28-2009 03:02 PM

Haha, finally ppl realize $5 a day can add up to big amount. Some ppl just have really poor planning.

Great68 01-28-2009 03:05 PM

As much as I hate the shitty Folgers they brew at my work, at least it's free. Serves my caffeine fix just fine.

unit 01-28-2009 03:09 PM

heres why starbucks is going to shit:
every financial article on how to save a ton every month says something about, "save $5 a day by bringing your own coffee instead of going to starbucks". with tough times, people are skipping starbucks, its an unnecessary cost. $4-5 a morning is as expensive as smoking half a pack a day.

Hondaracer 01-28-2009 03:11 PM

starbucks plain coffee blows anyways, timmy's is wayy better, and there's only a few specialty ones i like from bux anyways

like many companies they were way too slow in reacting to changing economic times, Mcdonalds pretty much grabbed all their business and many other coffee shops when they started offering 1$ coffee's

Euro7r 01-28-2009 03:17 PM

The only drink I like from starbuxs is their fraps. I wouldn't pay for their coffee. Way overpriced. I could go to superstore and buy a jar of coffee and make many cups for the price of one cup at starbuxs.

no timmy near my work place

Lomac 01-28-2009 03:50 PM

Didn't Starbucks close something like 60-odd stores out of 80 in Australia last year?

I wouldn't be too upset if they start closing up shops around here. I work in an area where there's literally four Starbucks on one single intersection (200th and the Bypass in Langley). Two of 'em are even right next door to one another...

hotjoint 01-28-2009 03:51 PM

I'm glad I don't drink coffee its such a waste of money

johny 01-28-2009 03:52 PM

now they'll only have one per block instead of 3 per block! oh no!

I don't even drink the free coffee at work, let alone every pay for it.

They still probably make killer profit on that $1 coffee.

I bet the cup they put the coffee in is worth more than the coffee itself.

_Hotsauce_ 01-28-2009 04:30 PM

Starbucks and Timmies coffee sucks nuts.

asian_XL 01-28-2009 05:04 PM

my gf used to be a starbuck addict,
bought her a really good coffee maker last year and she tells me she saves at least $1500 per year. Making your own coffee (with above average beans) only costs you like less than 50cents per cup. Imagine what can do you with $1500

+1

Timmys = dish water
Starbucks = water downed coffee swill

Cafe Artigianos ftw !

Ferra 01-28-2009 05:05 PM

people should realize starbuck coffee isn't really THAT expensive compare to the same thing from timmy or mcdonald.
The $3-$5 coffee are all latte and specialty drinks. Their brew coffee is around $1.2-1.9, which is really not VERY far off from its competitors

matrixfwd 01-28-2009 05:09 PM

SB's has free refills. customized drinks are cheaper if you used a registered card to pay as syrups, soy are free option.

willystyle 01-28-2009 05:18 PM

Screw Starbucks. I prefer Caffe Artigiano, now if only they had more locations and open late.

impactY 01-28-2009 05:26 PM

sb is a rip off

Rich Sandor 01-28-2009 05:28 PM

the trick is to work somewhere where coffee is free. :)

and honestly, you can make any cup of coffee taste good with enough cream & sugar. :)
