Of course it's plain and bland. That's the whole idea - it's simple, it's fast, it's uncluttered. Too many sites get bogged down with fancy graphics and gaudy Flash and tons of sponsored ads. CL works well on smartphones, WAP browsers, and dialup. It just works.

whats with their tacky website layout. for being a popular website they need to get new website engineers | where have you been man? craigslist is pretty much a one man show. Quote:

Yeah, I think its a pretty awesome deal. | CL only makes money on real estate and job listing in selected cities. Maybe erotic too...haha
I mean the site can be sooo much more and also generate that much more money. But craig just doesn't want to take it to that level. He is happy living in his sf house and keeping the site simple as possible.

I don't use CL very often unless I'm looking for a vehicle or random odds-and-ends. I've found some very awesome deals on CL for vehicles ($300 for my current car and $600 for a parts car with more than $3000 in new parts and jdm engine), and I've managed to sell some stuff on there pretty hassle free. You'll always get the random douche trying to lowball you but, provided you ignore 'em, it's not too bad.

Kijiji is a site that was created by eBay after they purchased craigslist. There is currently a suit going on against eBay saying they violated the intellectual property and devalued CL by creating and pimping kijiji so relentlessly.

Craigslist is da bomb. It's free, and it's easy to use.
Add me to the list of people who have made and saved lots of money via craigslist.
And no I've never used the personals or erotic services... lol. |

so tell me why craigslist is still so popular. the site has got one of the most unappealing designs. am i the only one who thinks it sucks? | You might not be the only one, but probably most would disagree with you though. It doesn't have to be appealing. It just needs to be EFFECTIVE, which is what it was designed to be. Quote:

If you're the buyer, you should make sure you have some legitimate contact information from the seller and confirm that what you're buying is exactly as described. If you're the seller, you should make sure that you're not meeting someone in a secluded, sketchy area where they might rob you. If you take the necessary common sense precautions, your transactions will go smoothly. Quote:

This isn't exactly current, but it gives a good idea... http://www.mslater.com/2007/1/26/the-craigslist-anomaly
They had 23 employees in 2007, and were the 7th ranked site in terms of page views.

How is it worse than people you find from newspaper ads?
How is it worse than people you find from posting up flyers on bulletin boards?

Why would anyone complain it sucks....
Let's see, it's free and the site is very popular = fast sales. Don't see why anyone could ask for anything more.

I've sold some stuff on Craigslist. It's simple and effective. As mentioned by others, it's free. Your other alternatives........... RS? Bwahahahaha........... try to sell something worth 100 bucks for 50 bucks, you get offer of 5 bucks.

craigslist has A LOT of scammers
i sold a phone a few weeks back. i listed it for $300, and i got at least 10 interested buyers say "I will offer you $300USD, i will give you extra $150 for shipping."
and the the rest of the story is.. i am not in town, my son/daughter/cousin/dog/.../ lives in africa and i want to buy this phone and send it to them as a graduation/wedding/sex/.../ gift. give me your paypal address and i will send you the money."
finally, some REAL people contacted me a week later and sold it for $250 CASH. =)
