Was This Some Type of Scam?

An hour ago, some guy called my house and claimed we ordered $160 worth of Chinese food at some Chinese restaurant on St. John Street(Port Moody). At first I was like WTF is this? We just ate like an hour before the call, so it doesn't make sense for "us" to call and order $160 of food. It couldn't be downstairs cause we don't rent it out.

So we started talking on the phone and he kept trying to make sure he got the right number, address, postal code and name on the house. They were all correct(kind of weird but I guess you can find it on yellow/white pages).

Then started to give me discounts on the food I DIDN'T order and told me to just keep it for tomorrow or give it away. Then proceeded to say, it's going to be coming outta his pocket if he doesn't get the food out and the chef has been working on this order for the past hour, he'll be pissed if it doesn't leave the kitchen soon.

So he told me he'll give me 50% off the food, just take it and leave it for tomorrow(I told him we already ate dinner) cause it's "$160 worth of food, for like $70 or something" So he get's me on hold for a minute then comes back and tells me the "driver" has already left, so "just give him like $20 or $40 when he arrives and take the food"

At this point, I was like dude I'm not paying you anything for food I don't want or ordered. So after another 2 minutes of talking, he finally agreed and said "When the driver comes, just tell him Kenneth(sp?) saids to bring the food back"

End of phone conversation, waited an hour for this "driver" to come knock on my door so I can send him back to the restaurant. No one came..kind of fishy and sketchy to be honest..

My Uncle said it was a break-and-enter attempt, where the person calls the house to see if anyone's home and/or make sure their aren't that many people, so they can break into the house and take whatever. That's what he thinks and knows of people that have had it happen to him.

Edit: The guy spoke perfect English, pretty sure he was Caucasian. I have Caller ID with his name + number, should I post it up or something?

do a revserve look up at 411.ca

Why don't you cross check the number.

Post the number and name if things don't check out to help others. The number should match a restaurant's number but if it doesn't, that is extremely fishy.

HonestTea 02-28-2009 08:27 PM

I did use Canada 411 and nothing showed up, I'm going to try yellow/white pages right now.

Edit: Just tried yellow pages and NADA

Why not call the restaurant and confirm the details that the guy gave you? Driver's name, his name, order, etc etc

gilly 02-28-2009 08:57 PM

very fishy. Why don't the guy who called you, call "kenneth" to go back to the restaurant? But instead, he lets "kenneth" come to your house and tells you to tell him to go back to the restaurant. Doesn't make sense at all. Very fishy man.

watch your ass, man

HonestTea 02-28-2009 09:03 PM

LB: I will do it eventually; IE: Monday

gilly: The guy that called me was called "Kenneth", he didn't tell me the drivers name.

agreed, watch out.... dont let anyone inside the house and make sure you tell the cops about this. call the non priority number.

Culture_Vulture 02-28-2009 09:09 PM

Kenneth tells you to deliver a message to the driver, instead of phoning the driver himself. Most restaurants would require the delivery boy to have a cell phone on him during delivery.

Sounds sketched out, I would inform the popo right away.

HonestTea 02-28-2009 09:12 PM

^ I KNOW EH WTF

This is 2009, everyone has a cell phones nowadays.....I was shocked as well when he didn't have the power to call the driver and told me to..

welfare 02-28-2009 09:34 PM

i've heard of this scam. kenneth sends the decoy "delivery boy" to your house with some mistaken order at an unbelievable discounted price. then, while you're at the door arguing about the price, homeboy sneaks through the backdoor and ties up your wife and kids. seen it down in guatemala before. not a happy ending

HonestTea 02-28-2009 09:53 PM

^ wow... err...

btw what's the non emergency police line, that I can report this to?

What was the #?

welfare 02-28-2009 10:38 PM

yo, dude. i was just playin. it's probably nothing

InvisibleSoul 02-28-2009 11:25 PM

That's some weird ass scheme, however it's supposed to work.

Eastwood 02-28-2009 11:34 PM

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was a legit call.

Maybe Kenneth calls people to claim they ordered food, then when they verify they haven't ordered food, Kenneth "claims" he's giving out ridiculously good prices for food.

I mean $70 is still $70 and that guy should have made some decent coin off you if you decided to buy it.

Durrann1984 02-28-2009 11:41 PM

Thats some freaky stuff

ya report it to police

Euro7r 02-28-2009 11:49 PM

Damn, I wouldn't have spent all that time talking to him. I would have swore at the guy and told him to screw off. Those random phone calls.

RRxtar 03-01-2009 12:57 AM

call the number back and see if something like "wong chong fong chinese food" answers.

if its some dude that says "yo wassup", call the cops.

StylinRed 03-01-2009 12:59 AM
