I normally don't eat crab but king crab meat is so good. I noticed Kirin's King Crab goes for $13.80/lb. Surely, that's a rip-off. Yes, T&T sells it for about $10/lb.

but the problem that i suspect a chinese restaurant would pull is

they take out the grab and show it to u, claiming its 13 pounds..how would you know they didnt bs u and its actually 10 pounds? ok even if it is 12 pounds, by the time they go back to the kitche they might give u a 9 pounder and cook that shit and serve it to u.

So in the end, that 13 pounder my just be a display, that keeps on getting taken out to show to each customer. the display crab i call it..

happens quite a bit
what worse is when restaurants swap out the live crab for a dead one

6793026 04-02-2009 03:18 PM

it happens a lot however, i can be sure that kirin hasn't done that to me before
kirin 8 lb king crab (13.99) was bigger than this other place that was 11 lbs (8.99)
u really get what u pay for.

i knew it, i knew i aint the only one feeling jewed on receiving a smaller crab

Mugen EvOlutioN 04-03-2009 07:53 AM

the funny thing is you cant really do it to crab and lobster

because crab usually ranges 2-3 pounds

lobster usually rages from 4-6 pounds

alaska king crab is hard to measure

HonestTea 04-06-2009 11:44 PM

Just ate it today and it was pretty good BUT the restaurant made it pretty salty with SHIT LOADS of garlic bits on top...so it kind of overpowered the sweetness of the King Crab :(

$10.80/pound haha

Planning to buy King Crab next week and get my mom to make it at home, probably better then eating it out at the restaurant :D

thats how a lot of restaurants do it
putting lots of garlic bits on top

garlic wasnt that bad

Durrann1984 04-07-2009 12:49 AM

isnt the restaurant on renfrew and 1st the one above T&T
has king crabs for 8.99 correct me if wrong

TheSalesman 04-07-2009 02:48 AM

^ yeah the happy king restaraunt lol.
i ate there last night and it was ok...8.99 made with garlic and deep fried, +18.88 for the rice in the crab head.

Durrann1984 04-07-2009 07:21 AM

^^ haha yeh i had the samething too

it was pretty decent for the price lol

.Renn.Sport 04-07-2009 10:35 AM

8.99 places rip cheap ppl like you off

TheSalesman 04-07-2009 10:47 AM

yeah it probably doesn't weigh 12lbs which is what they charged me. but at 14/lbs, i would only get 7.7lbs at the 14/lbs place. I have no complaints. I had king crab a couple weeks before and they charged 14/lbs and I think we got less.

djm 04-08-2009 11:22 PM

what is a good place that doesn't rip u off + cooks well along kingsway/victoria/fraser/main?

AsBannedAsItGets 04-09-2009 12:39 PM

If crabs weren't so expensive much like most seafood, I could actually see myself eating it everyday. I love crabs its just that I don't wanna gets crabs. See the play on words there :/

There is a restaurant on Kingsway just past slocan if you're going east. So driving east on Kingsway, you'll pass Churchs on the right, then you'll pass Slocan St and then halfway into the block, it is the restaurant.

There is the word dragon in it but I can't remember the english name.

i had king crab for my birthday couple weeks ago
about 12 ppl
had 2 ~11lb crabs at kingford seafood resturant
they brought out 2 crabs (weighed both in front of me)
the portion seemed about right, and didnt seem like they jewed me
3 big plates of garlic steamed
2 plates of the deep fried kunckles
and 2 bowls of fried rice.

$9.88 per lb
i got a bunch of other stuff as well (ie. 2 peking ducks, a bunch of veigies, seafood platter etc) bill came to about $750 including tax and tip which wasnt bad at all for 12 people

and a for chinese new year, we went to "northern dynasty" for king crab, had 1 14lb crab, for 7 people, they made with steam with garlic, and steamed with this chinese rice wine, and fried rice

i think Northern dynasty serves the king crab slightly better. but i wasnt sure on the cost at the time, right now they advertise it for 10.99 per lb

Kingford is at the corner of no.3 and westminister hwy
Northern DYnasty is across from ESTEA in rmd

Personally i can't tell the taste diff between king crab and normal crab. I'd rather just have more of the normal crab.

I think the way they cook king crab vs normal crab plays a big difference. I have yet to see normal dungeness crab split open and steamed with garlic, or king crab done in butter cream sauce. :D
