Meowjin 03-11-2009 02:11 PM

I like eating them at my friends resteraunt. Continental on 5 road and cambie. Big hall, usually has shows, and private rooms too.

miss_crayon 03-11-2009 02:44 PM

tis the season for king crab
been going to top gun and red star for it
if youre a gold member at TG it's about $13 a pound

!SG 03-11-2009 02:55 PM

i vote redstar too!

king crab served 3 ways.

deepfried with garlic, in coconut milk sauce, and fried rice!

Vansterdam 03-11-2009 03:40 PM

^ thats crazy is it a 3 course meal of some sort? how much is it

willystyle 03-11-2009 03:56 PM

How would you order this if ur only dining with 2 people?

They usually serve this in parties of 8-10 at chinese restaurants.

RED STAR FTW! , I also have it at Coquitlam Kirin.... goooooood stuff

windchaser 03-11-2009 06:10 PM

how about fisherman terrance at alberdeen ? is it any good ? currently those resturants are offering $13.8/lbs right now. And red star is offering them at $18/lbs. Is red star worth the extra money ?

!SG 03-11-2009 07:31 PM

you order the king crab as a whole.

its some package deal. basically the king crab price / lb + special price for cooked 3 ways.

its good stuff, we usually go to redstar to celebrate chinese new years..

murd0c 03-11-2009 07:36 PM

you can also get it at Clancys for $10 a lb as well

rouentahl 03-11-2009 09:27 PM

Do you guys find that the crabs are getting smaller this year?

They used to be 12 lbs or more a couple years ago, but this year it looks like 9-10 lbs is quite the norm!

Makes me think about the sustainability ... I do want to keep enjoying King Crabs for a few more decades...

rymack 03-11-2009 11:51 PM

Was watching the F word the other night and Ramsey was diving for them in Norway ...i think. maybe finland? Anyway they have a epidemic of kingcrab iover there and they are seen as a nuisance. Hopefully they will somehow capitalize on that and start catching them out of that area. more crab=cheaper crab

Alaskan King Crab fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. I highly doubt they'll come down in price, if any, they would only go up.

no, all the ones I've been getting are 13-14lbs this year :D

just had another round of king crab at jade garden...
14lbs for 5 ppl
steam the legs with garlic/green onions
then the middle part stir fried with top layer soy sauce, first time had it done this way and surprisingly tasted much better then spicy deep fried, the meat was very flavored with the soy sauce
then the usual baked rice.

tip for eating king crab at restaurant, always go to the ones that prices are most expensive per lbs. those $12 and under per lbs places will never give out the right amount. they usually charge you 13lbs for a 8lbs crab

Grandmaster TSE 03-12-2009 12:01 PM

they are getting cheaper

in restaurant is good, but i like to cook it myself, and its very simple
buy the crab, cleaver it up
mix diced garlic with a bit of oil and salt and spread that on the crab meat and just steam it
its a nice flavor with the garlic and you get the natural sweet taste of the crab

I heard the same thing haha. They pretty much scavenge whatever is on the sea floor and consume everything in its path. The reason why the price doesn't move is because there's a limit on how many can be caught per year and since its one of their primary sources of income they won't increase the limit, apparently.

twitchyzero 03-12-2009 09:07 PM

i'd usually have it few times a year when it's near the $10/lb range

i've never tried it deep-fried or w/ coconut sauce cause i usually eat it atw home. Which way do you guys like it best?

IMO king crab >> regular crab > lobster

just not a big lobster fan =p

willystyle 03-12-2009 09:13 PM

Lobster > King Crab > BC Crab

I've only had King Crab once.. I didn't think too much of it, but I'd like to have it again soon..
