RS member selling unsafe car.

Selling unsafe car?

my friend just picked up this car, it suppose to have some minor brake problem.
(at least that's what he was told by the seller.)

Within couple hours of picking up the car, it lost brake COMPLETLY!!
I happen to be driving it, and brake just gave up, no pressure on pedal straight to the floor.
I had to use e-brake to stop the car.

I don't want to believe that you had knowledge of this.
Making quick buck is one thing, but putting person's life in danger is another.

fucking idiot. watch out.

that sucks dude.
maybe you should of tried to fix the brakes right away knowing that it was messed up.. unless you were planning to do that right after you picked it up.

he was planning to take it to the shop first thing today for brake job anyways,
he kinda knew master cylinder was 'weak', and he was expecting couple hundred dollar repair.

what we didn't know was... it would FAIL COMPLETLY pretty much right away..

have you guys driven a car with NO brake?? it's fucking scary....
e-brake does not stop the car very well....

What are you gonna do about it. The "minor" brake problem could have been a problem long enough for the brakes to fail. Did you get it inspected?

I was driving it when it failed..

and.. oh trust me.. I tried everything...

bring a car to complete stop w/o using brake is not easy..

engine brake, e-brake.. it still takes time..

nothing. as you know, used cars sales are as-is and unless we can some how prove the seller has knowledge about this we can't do much.

I would like to think that it's very unfortunate coincident..

I would hate to think there's person out there trying to sell a car with failing brake in order to get some extra buck.

my buddy is good with a car, he knew brake is the pretty much only thing that's needed.

But did you get it inspected before you handed over the cash?
If not, the blame is all on you.

my car had to get its master cylinder replaced because of the same issue, my brake went all the way to the floor with little effort but not every single time i applied the brake , sometimes it would work and other times not as well. it is pretty scary esp if your on a hill.
brakes are key in a car if u knew it had issues you shouldve looked at it right away

answer would be NO,

blame my buddy if you want,

He knew that he could be looking at some repair bills but not complete failure of brake.

Well in all honesty, its your buddy's fault for not getting it inspected. Yes its a shame that the seller knew it had problems and didnt mention it, but what's done is done

Draft, Yes I do agree with you and my buddy does take responsibility for it.

I think the seller knew about the problem, that's why we are so chocked.

When it comes to serious safety issue like this, I was expecting ppl would be bit more honest about it.

like you said, what's done is done.. but what a shame..

Used car, buyer beware for everything. Can't trust or assume anyone or anything. Lesson learned. Good thing you didn't kill yourself or anyone else.

yeah, it worked but with soft padel feel.

we knew master cylinder would need to be changed, but what we didn't know was.. it IS failing already.

he could've said.. "it's already failing and it's on and off, have it repaired right away"

then again, I'm asking too much.

wait.. am I asking too much?

if you are telling some to have brake repaired anyways, why not tell them they are failing already??
I mean.. seller/buyer both knew it needed repair, why not mention it's failing already? it's not going to cost anything more.
afraid of deal falling off?

I can't place much fault in the sellers hands. It's not like he sabotaged the brakes, and the brake systems are basically a consumable. Was the seller still driving the car before your friend bought it? Like it sucks having to spend $$ to repair a car, and that the brakes failed, but it is an 18 year old car...

At least you guys are ok. That's something to be thankful for.

when someone tells you something should be repaired, isn't it safe to assume that the part is failing (could possibly go any second) and thats why it should be repaired?

According to you, the seller told your buddy that the part is faulty. Your buddy took the risk to buy it and still drive it. boo hoo

You knew it was failing... The brakes were soft already. What are you so upset about? It just finally gave out when you were driving!

i'd say the seller is at complete fault for not saying anything..but he did warn about the brakes..(who knows..maybe it didnt completely fail the last time he was driving it)

I think it's best that the OP have a mod remove this thread to save him/herself the humility of all this.

if you guys think it's 100% my buddy's fault, that's fine.

like I said before, he is taking responsibility for it.

and no, I'm not deleting this post.

Imagine if the handbrake didn't work. My mom's car had a brake issue before and the handbrake wouldn't work sometimes (old Audi 80), then one day the brakes failed but luckily the handbrake did work. Lesson learned: make sure you check your car up regularily.
