You're talking to the wrong people when you call. This is the number for retentions: 1-888-936-7283; threaten (in a polite way) to cancel your contract and see what they offer to make you reconsider. Tell them how your current phone is messed up and how you've been eying the iPhone-- and when they start talking about data plans, tell them how you have no need for it at the moment but if you change your mind, you'll call them. This is exactly what I did last week. I had 6 months left on my current 3 yr plan. Not only did I get an iPhone without a data plan for a fairly good price, I was also able to get a better plan than I had before (ie: free unlimited incoming minutes, and bonus daytime minutes).
Before I spoke to Retentions, I spoke to a CSR at customer care and they were totally clueless. I was told that I couldn't re-negotiate my current contract until it expired and that I couldn't get an iPhone without a data plan.
When you talk about going to metrotown, you kind of lose me. The only way you can get an iPhone for 200-300$ is only if you sign a
new 3 year term... meaning now you'll have 2 contracts to deal with. No one in the mall will sell you an iPhone for $250 outright without a commitment.
