**Virus: Conflicker**

Conflicer Computer Virus
Quote:

here’s a Windows worm running wild out there—“skyrocketing,” in BBC parlance—so you’d best have your install all patched up and your anti-virus software up to date. Or, you know, get a Mac, biased Biggs often jokes in the official CrunchGear chat room. The worm, primarily known as Conflicker, spread widely over the holidays, when companies’ IT staffs were on break. It does pretty much all the nasty things that worms are known to do: sneak in, either via the Internet or via the old Sneakernet (USB drives and the like), change your password, start running services that download further code from some Web site, etc.
Microsoft has already issued a patch, and anti-virus software has been updated
Snopes:

Microsoft security patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/com...icker.mspx#EUB

For those who do updates regularly it should be fine. Otherwise it is time to update your comp. A decent anti-virus program will protect your comp as well.

but depending on the seriousness of this worm, you might not need to--your modem is hooked up to your router.

What do you mean by that? You mean does it affect things other than computers? (like cell phones, microwaves, fridges?) :D

It's mainly Windows based PC's that will be affected if they are infected with the virus.

If you want to be careful, run Windows update today and make sure you're patched up. Get a decent AV program. I use Avira - it's free and pretty highly rated. Make sure it's updated. Do a scan of your computer.

Grab a copy of Malwarebytes and Spybot. Update and run a scan.

And, finally, if you're not satisfied that you're clean after all that, you can always head over to the McAfee site here and download the Stinger scan engine that searches specifically for the Conficker (and it's variants).

The virus is going to attack tomorrow? I updated everything and scanned, it seemed to be fine so far

Some frigging reason I can't sign on my msn.. I hope it isn't a virus working up.. Says my contact list isnt available

It's supposed to get an "update" on what/who/where to attack tomorrow. I think the worst case scenario would be that it attacks tomorrow, but it's not certain that tomorrow is the attack date.

Qmx323 03-31-2009 01:00 PM

The internet is serious business.

fuck im scared :(

technically, it was "tomorrow" for all of Asia and half of Europe a couple hours ago.
so far, I've seen nothing though.

Lomac 03-31-2009 09:03 PM

Y2K scare: Part Deux

Euro7r 03-31-2009 09:08 PM

Seriously, how serious can this really be. Just reformat your PC if you get infected with a virus. Or buy a new computer if it's that bad.

typ. 03-31-2009 09:25 PM

hmm. is this an april fools joke?
possibly? tomorrow is april fools.. haha

AzNightmare 03-31-2009 09:25 PM

I haven't even used an anti-virus program since 2004 because I hated how it took up resources in the background and would randomly have popups blocking so many applications.
I've decided I'll be my anti-virus.

So far, never had a virus. Probably won't get infected by this one, since it's probably a hoax. Although Snopes is supposely a good source in detecting myth or not...
I'll let you guys know if I get hit tomorrow, but I'm not planning to take any extra precautions, because my hunch is that it's probably nothing.

monkeywrench 03-31-2009 09:43 PM

^but even the microsoft website mentions about the Conflicer virus

tough 03-31-2009 09:46 PM

In that case... it's pretty damn legit then. lol
Unless microsoft is pulling some April's Fool joke on everyone, which is really gonna piss a lot of people off. So not a smart idea on their part.

But how long is this supposed to last?

JSALES 03-31-2009 10:17 PM

i'm scared, my norton anti-virus isn't up to date and my mcafee sucks
