Starbucks announces first-ever Canadian closing in Richmond, B.C.
Last Updated: Monday, March 30, 2009 | 6:54 PM PT

Starbucks Corp. will shut down its Aberdeen Centre location in Richmond, B.C., on Wednesday, the company's first-ever closing in Canada.

The coffee retailer said the decision to close was caused by current economic conditions and because the location itself was under-performing.

Some employees at the Richmond location said they were given just five days' notice about the pending shutdown.

Starbucks has announced it plans on closing 100 coffee shops outside of the U.S., but it has so far not revealed how many more outlets in B.C. will be shuttered.

Starbucks has 365 locations in the province.

pure.life 03-30-2009 10:20 PM

maybe the C-lai's don't like coffee. They prefer tea.

Synaptik 03-30-2009 10:21 PM

Sarcasm > You

ToyotaPowah 03-30-2009 11:56 PM

This is no real surprise after seeing Starbuck's current financial reports. Expect more closures to follow.

GordonTse 03-30-2009 11:58 PM

should close one of the two at robson/thurlow. or whatever that corner is.

keifun 03-31-2009 12:06 AM

Im not surprised its the one at aberdeen. People in the area want bubble tea instead of coffee, I would assume.

Why? The reason the 2nd one open across the street was because the 1st was too busy and couldnt efficiently handle all the customers.

pandalove 03-31-2009 12:20 AM

no c lai would pay 5 dollar for a medium sized coffee u crazy?
5 dollar can order 2 dimsums already

Alby 03-31-2009 01:00 AM

medium sized coffee is $1.98. can barely pay for a dimsum.

asian_XL 03-31-2009 01:12 AM

aberdeen location isn't that good, traffic is low compare to other location.

of course rent is crazy right there

jimmerz 03-31-2009 01:15 AM

seiruosly? they would rather close aberdeen than the one on oak and 67th? that place is like DEAD

fliptuner 03-31-2009 01:24 AM

Meh, walk a few blocks down. I'm sure there's another one just around the corner.

mrclean604 03-31-2009 02:34 AM

Synaptik 03-31-2009 02:40 AM

rogers/blockbusters all need to close. rentals are obsolete with cheap dvd prices and broadband pirating.

AzNightmare 03-31-2009 03:08 AM

Well that sucks. I used to sneak off to that Starbucks during my shift when I was working at Daiso...
The large coffee costed me like almost half my hourly pay. Horrible. :(

Harvey Specter 03-31-2009 04:03 AM
