nope, your have the obligation to return it to the owner or police. It has not been abandoned yet. If you get caught, you will charged with stolen lost property or theft.

From what I know, they will send the ID back only if it is not inside a wallet.
Or else it will be forward to the nearby police station, and the owner will take
forever to get it back.

Just take the time to look up the person's phone number and tell them to meet you at a time and place convenient to you. I've never found anybody's wallet before but having lost mine once I was glad someone at least dropped it off at the lost and found with nothing missing inside. I've found 2-3 cell phones before and when I gave them back to the owners they end up being grateful about it.

Well one thing is it's the easiest way to get a wallet back to somebody. Go to police station and say you found a wallet, they keep it at their property office at 312 main st and call owner to come pick it up.

I'd return everything, regardless of how much cash there is. I can only imagine the frustration of the owner. I'd want someone else to return my stuff.

I had my wallet stolen about 10 years ago, and a few months after I replaced all my ID, cards, etc, it arrived in an envelope from Canada Post. I guess someone chucked it in the mailbox and it eventually found it's way home.

About two years ago, my wallet fell out of my pocket as I got into my car at Lordco. It had about $160 cash in it. Got home and realized it wasn't there. Drove back (about 40 minutes had elapsed at this point). I got out and started looking around. A guy walked over and asked if I'd lost a wallet. Everything was still there, all the cash, ID, cards. I offered him a good chunk of the cash as a reward, but he turned it down. He said he'd lost his wallet before, and know what a pain in the ass it was to get everything replaced, and he didn't want to see anyone else go through that. Needless to say, if I find someones wallet, I'm getting it back to them intact

I would return the wallet. I can totally empathize the frustration of the owner. After all, you'd feel good in yourself for doing something right!

I've found 2 wallets in my life. I returned both of them with money included to the police.

Both I found were young girls wallets. I can tell you if I opened the wallet and out popped $1000 with a picture of a guido, I definitely wouldn't return it.

Pretty much the same idea. I lost my wallet one day while filling up gas at Chevron by Marine and Main St. Went back 20 mins later and no one turned it in. I was such a bitch trying to replace everything. I would never want to go through that again and hope no one else will either.

Back in my college days, I was leaving class and driving through the lot. Looked to my right and saw a nice white Integra. Right beside the driver door laid a wallet sitting upright. Picked it up, left a note and got a call a few hours later.

Returned the wallet to the owner, and it turns out he was an RS member too. He was nice enough to offer me some cash for my time and help, but I refused. Nice guy, forgot his name now.

Karma is a bitch.

I lost my wallet when I was in my teens with over $400 in it outside a Mac's on the North Shore. I was getting ready to buy House Paint and Supplies with it for a Condo Painting job.

Some woman called me up to come collect it at her house and everything was there! Needless to say I bought her a thank you card + a bottle of nice wine.

Since then I have found many wallets over the years and have returned all of them. Funny how a life lesson when young impacts you as you get older.

Good luck on getting your wallet back OP.

return it, $50 is not worth having a bad conscience.

I lost my wallet at school when I was younger and I found it at the lost and found with cash still intact. I hoped I'd find it, and was really surprised and happy when I did.

I'd feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing someone else might feel the same way I did when they find theirs returned intact.

I'd return it to the address on the license I wouldn't even have to think about it.

I have a friend in Calgary that found a wallet last month with over a grand in it. Returned it to the owner, got a bunch of karma and wouldn't accept a reward.

Honestly if there was more cash in the wallet I found than was in my wallet, I would even the playing field a little bit. Definitely wouldn't take the IDs and CCs because those are a bitch to replace.

I've had my wallet stolen before, and yes, it's a pain replacing the cards/IDs. I could care less about the money as I don't carry more than $40-60 tops, on me at any given time.

That being said, if there's ID in the wallet, I'd return it. I found some lady's wallet in Chilliwack before, with about $800 in it, plus her ID, etc. and even her car keys. Happened to be in Walmart at the time. Took it to one of the workers, got them to page the lady, and made sure she got the wallet back.

OP here:

I've found wallets and phones in the past, and have always made sure to locate the owner and return the items.

This is now my 2nd time I've lost my wallet only to never see it again. While I recognize that its my irresponsibility, I've truly realised now that there are way too many selfish people in this city. My opinion: you have got to be major scum not make an effort to return an addressed wallet - ESPECIALLY the IDs.

I wouldn't even think twice about if I came across somebody else's... but i guess its the sad reality of things.

Kudos to the majority of people on revscene who have morals, and don't fall in the category of scum. To the rest of you... I hope you get hit by a car. In the mean time, I'll be at ICBC signing up for another drivers license...
