335i or 328i?

Will be returning my lease vehicle early and need to decide on which one to get soon.
I don't drive aggressively much at all, so i am thinking of going back to a 328i and save myself $200 a month compared to the 335.

Other than the engine and leather seat, what else is different on the 335? Would the differences justify the $9000 premium in the price tag?
I am also driving a 330i now, is going back to a 328 a big downgrade? I found the engine on the 330i is quite sufficient for what I need. (except the car is somewhat of a PITA with minor nuisance coming up every few months)

Anyone own either car and have comments to share?
Is the 335 turbo gonna be expensive to maintain and keep if I plan to keep the car for the long term?

So are you leasing or buying your next car??
Also, I'm assuming you're talking about 328i and 335i sedan right? Not coupe?
I would say, if you don't drive aggressively, the 328i will give you 230HP, which is more than enough.
Stick with the 328i man

LanEvoMR 06-05-2009 11:06 AM

test drive both and then make your decision, if 328i is enough for you then save yourself some money.....but most people will opt for the 335 as it's power is quite addictive

dark0821 06-05-2009 11:22 AM

and 335 chiped.. is... well...smokin fast...

Rich Sandor 06-05-2009 12:40 PM

Go talk to your salesperson who leased you your car and ask them if you can take out a new 328 for a few hours to see how it compares to your 335. That's really the only way to know if you're going to be happy.

q0192837465 06-05-2009 12:55 PM

335 has dual exhaust.................

JoshuaWong 06-05-2009 01:03 PM

Is your 330i a E90? or E46? If your looking for a 328i why not stick with the 330i assuming its the E90? Since your not looking for the power of a 335i the 330i should make you happy since its basically a 335i with slight difference in brakes/tires/engine. The 330i also got a smooth NA engine that you won't get in a 335i either. The 330i is noticeably better than the 328i even though the power difference is only 30hp. I heard the transmission is better than those in 323i/325i/328i. Keep in mind that your 330i is a 1 year limit run in north america as well if that means anything to you.

If you really insist on getting 328i or 335i I'd say get the 335i. A lot is different not just the engine and the leather. At least the brakes/tires/suspension/transmission is different but I am sure there is more. Have you checked out E90post? Price wise, when I bought my 335i the monthly payment was only around $150 more than a 328i so it was no brainer to me. Obviously that price will change depending on what options you opt for. If you asking if the 335i is $9000 better than the 328i, I'd say yes and no, depending on what kind of driver you are and what you look for in a car. Good luck on your decision.

There is no more 330... it goes like this 323-->328-->335/335 Diesel... that's only if you go E90, for E92/E93, it's only 328i/xi-->335i/xi or M3

Harvey Specter 06-05-2009 01:54 PM

I test drove the E92 328i with sport package when I leased my E92 335i and the only difference really was the engine/power delivery and the brakes. Overall the 328i was quick but the 335i is in whole different league. A few things to remember, the 335i's do have the fuel pump issues and transmission has been known to be a bit sluggish, not sure if they have the same tranny issue with the 328i's. Otherwise the car is basically the same exterior and interior wise with a few different cosmetic differences.

By the way, I prefer leatherette over real leather. Much more durable and stiffer and in the long run it still looks new compared to leather seats which tend to wear down.

dkvby 06-05-2009 02:19 PM

35k still on original pump, but i did hv wastegate rattle and fixed with turbos replacement.

HonestTea 06-05-2009 02:28 PM

If you're planning to lease, then 335i for sure! However, if you're going to purchase it or finance it then I'm guessing 328i would be a better choice.

I'm assuming you're probably going to keep it long-term if you're purchasing, so 328i would definitely give you less issues, like reliability for the Turbos, wastegate rattles and HPFP issue, which is basically a hit and a miss. I've seen people replace two HPFP in a month(and counting) while others, like dkvby are still on their original HPFP.

Interior/Exterior are basically identical(like what Jah said) difference is probably the exhaust-pipes, single vs dual.

When the E90's first came out in 2006 there were 325i/330i then they changed it in 2007

dkvby 06-05-2009 02:46 PM

HPFP failure mostly caused by the ethanol in fuel damaging the seal, so just use chervon/petro u most likely wont hv a problem. And they hv the new hardware for the wastegate, so it doesnt rattle anymore i think. also, is DCT avaliable in canada yet?

as dark0821 said, chip it and it will smoking fast lol

Yah, if you're leasing the 335i would be fine but if you're buying it, I would go with the 328i but I think OP will be leasing.

Honestly saving $200 a month is quite a bit of money which could basically cover your insurance every month plus the 328i is imo fast enough for the casual driver who really doesn't care about 0-60 times or is interested in tracking the car. I know some people will say it's only $200 but for only $300 more i could have leased a M3, but $300 per month over 3 years is quite a bit of money.

dkvby 06-05-2009 02:53 PM

are u sure is 200 more? my fd just leased a brand new E90 335, 0 down and 600 included taxes ... omfg its cheap

Not surprised...I can get an 09 M3 out the door for ~66k through a friend that works at BMW.

Economy is down so the sales of luxury cars aren't doing that great.

If you have the extra money to afford the 335i then go for it. My friend has one and its a hell of a fun car to drive. You're looking to keep it long term as well so getting the "better" car right now will make you less likely to get that itch of wanting a new car a few years down the road cause it still performs well.

LanEvoMR 06-05-2009 03:58 PM

Ch28 you have PM.

Meowjin 06-05-2009 04:11 PM

my tl was 475 a month taxes in. Some really really cheap deals out there. But this was last year, im sure the deprecation on leases are more.

Is the m3 a demo?

are you sure??
I was quoted $895 tax incl for the 335i with zero upfront payment (all fees/pdi/freight goes to the payment)
That's for a ZERO option car with over $4000 discount.

Unless your friend got a $10k discount I don't think you can ever get the lease payment to $600 tax in. Do you know if it is a demo or a "manager used"?

Leasing has become very expensive with BMW due to them making the residual very low now. (I.e. a $40k 328i has residual of $19,500 after 39 months $50k 335i residual is $24,000, in comparison, my $50K 330i residual is $31K)
I am still gonna lease it, but most likely I will buyout the car at the end of the lease term this time.

My car salesman told me the M3 Sedan can be purchase for 55-60K before tax a while ago. No discount for M3 Coupe tho..lol otherwise I'd take it on a heartbeat.
The M3 Sedan is ugly for an M3

I leased my E90 335i almost 8 months ago and it was fairly good deal which is partly why I opt for the 335i as well. I am only paying $850 tax included with 0 down payment. Sport package w/ paddle was given no charge by the sales. The car was not at the lot as it was built from the factory then shipped as well. I'd say right now buying or leasing a new car have a lot of room for bargaining. If you can afford it, now is the time.

maxx 06-05-2009 10:07 PM

i say 328i - nothing better than the good old fashioned inline 6. the best engine ever mass produced.

I'm looking at a new 3 myself, the twin turbos are very appealing and evil at the same time, knowing I can bump the horses to 350 with an easy tune.

But i think I will stick to the true original inline 6.
