i dunno how to explain it, but the tape causes a lot of friction when it rubs against the skin...so a fast movement, like a punch, is enough to open the skin from the friction of the tape.

well, the way rypien's wrist/thumb was taped, it's similar to the way we tape it for sparring. i think it's more about the intent to injure here because it's not like the tape is gonna scrape the guys nose and make it bleed 
had only his wrist been taped up, i don't think it would have been a match penalty.

i think it's taped up because of a sprained thumb too. but it coulda been his left hand that caused the bleeding nose for all we know...i dont like the rule but it's in the book and has to be called

and the final blow was with the hand that wasn't taped so... yea
