So...Learning French Immersion has been a great benefit to Western Canada since when?
Nonetheless, for those of you who disagree, stop looking at the world through a straw.

the kids definately need to master the English language, but it doesnt hurt that much, from K-7 is a complete waste of time anyways same with most of highschool, if the kids' english skills are still poor in highschool, their grades can only suffer, their loss
English is probably one of the only important courses available in public schools

lolz, that's good. Let them shoot themselves in the foot. When they grow up & get into the real world, we'll have an advantage over them cuz we can speak BOTH English & Chinese fluently, not just Chinese.

no! this idea is retarded.
hate when immigrants come to this country which already have native languages and expect everything to conform to them. that's not how the world should work. and no, i'm not a 47th gen of a landed immigrant, i'm first

I kid. I kid.
But any way, I'm not saying I necessarily support it because there is not enough substantial evidence that supports any sort of basic requirement or demand for that matter. All this talk here about how FOBs + Mandarin enrollment blahblahblah is just heresay for the time being.
I would, however, agree for it to be put on a trial basis to see how it works and if there is an actual benefit, why not go for it?

Sure if its in Prince George or Nelson haha. I just think anywhere in the lowermainland is a waste of time. Add on top I thought all the schools are losing tons of money because of under-enrollment. I don't see this happening anyways, but thats just my op.

What do most Chinese parents speak to their kids at home? English? The kids are already immersed in mandarin/canto outside of school. If they want to learn the language, just speak to their parents and friends. Oh wait, the c-lais are too busy cruising around the city to give a damn..

French FTW, if i hadent been in french imersion, I would probably still be lost in paris to this day... LOL... 2 years ago, went on a family vacation to paris with mom and grandma and a few other relatives... I ended up being the only youngin there, so instead of going around paris with the family I went my own may around paris and visited every major landmark there.... Which was relatively easy since the canals all go to the major landmarks... All in all it was super easy to get around since i knew french and was in imersion everyone looked at me weird like how did i know french and why is it soo diffrent from the language in paris. since i am asian... BTW did i mention that I was only in grade 10 at the time....
I remember back in elementary school it was always french vs. english @ everything and french always won!!!.

Hey, when Mandarin is one of Canada's official languages, then hey, why not? But it isn't and really, there are only a few Chinese people compared to all the other Ethnic groups we have in Canada. For fuck sakes, there are a ton of Chinese schools around BC. Why not just take an after school course or a weekend course. Or are they too cheap to pay extra for their kids?

Sounds to me parents in Richmond just want to let their kids pass high-school without learning English under the guise of being in 'mandarin immersion' and not go through all the head-aches of ESL.
Mandarin immersion is actually a great idea for people who actually want to learn the language, but my money's on it being abused here, in RICHMOND of all freakin' places so obviously yeah, it's a terrible idea.

I could be mistaken, but I think most people are not understanding the purpose of the program. It's not intended to make the lives of Chinese immigrants easier, or for them to bypass learning the English language. The program is intended for those that want to learn Chinese so that it could benefit them in the future.
Actually, there is already one elementary school in Vancouver that offers something like this. Jamieson has a bilingual program where they start teaching Mandarin from grade 4. http://jamieson.vsb.bc.ca/Mandarin%2...20Program.html Quote:
This Program is Designed For Students Who
Are residents of Vancouver
Are fluent in English and have strong English reading and writing skills
Will be entering grade 4 in September and do not have Chinese literacy skills
OR
Are entering grade 5, 6, or 7 (if there is space available) and have some appropriate Chinese literacy skills
Priority will be given to students who meet all of the above criteria.
The Program Will Develop…
Mandarin oral communication skills for a variety of situations
Reading and writing skills using Chinese characters
High School Continuation
The program continues at Eric Hamber Secondary School.

The fact is when families of china, hk or taiwan decent can navigate through richmond without speaking a word of english is the stem of the problem. of course, to the cacausion this will benefit in the future career wise.
but really, this is just a way to abuse the system here in vancouver. the staffing is available to run this program as i kno teachers who are willing to run parent teacher conferences in canto and tell parents why english is important, this is already a great step, immersion is too extreme

however, immersion is a whole different scenario. that is putting a kid into school in grade 1 that is conducted 95% in mandarin. and the kid learns in nothing but mandarin for the next 12 years. thats no right.
French and English are the 2 national languages, and education should be primarily given in one or the other.

If more than anything, english should be taught as a higher priority instead, cuz I think English overall is a more universal language world-wide. | When do we in vancouver ever use french. I say say I never use it once. See if they allow french immersion they should allow hido immersion, cantnones immersion, maandrain immersion, japanese immersion, korean immersion, spanish immersion, italian immersion......
Either have immersion for every language or none. I don't use french and I am sure 99% of ppl in vancouver don't use french as well so why have it.\
Sure is french is one of the offical language in canada but honestly who ever use them.... maybe in Quebec

I think it's an interesting idea. From the perspective of looking to the future, knowing Mandarin would be great for doing business. Like it or not, China is an economic powerhouse, and there's a lot of business to be done there, and a lot of money to be made.

Chinese people are more stubborn than Jews when it comes to the issue of asimulation. Why do you think we even lasted for 5000 years and are still counting?
