Signaling a lane change towards the centre median? Just wondering if anyone has tried this method in the left lane on a highway to tell the driver in front to move to the slowlane? Assuming it's not rush hour or anything and it's pretty clear they're hogging the left, of course. I know people have used other methods like honking, tailgating, high-beams. But having been in Europe, one thing I've noticed is that people would signal a lane change towards the centre median? Usually that does the trick. Haven't had a chance to try that. This is certainly safer than using the other methods above. Especially at night, because the blinking yellow signal is sure to catch their attention. Not sure if it'll do anything though lol. Side note. I've also noticed when there's a 'sudden' stop ahead, people all turn on their hazard lights for a short period of time. Pretty nice. |
Well if they notice you're behind them with your signal light on, i'm pretty sure they're also aware that they're hogging the left lane. If they're hogging the left lane, chances are, they're oblivious to their surroundings anyways so it won't do a thing. European drivers> NA drivers > Vancouver drivers |
Have never done this, i prefer to revert to yelling, honking, and waving my club at the driver ahead of me and if this doesn't work then a drive by shooting usually fixes things. |
For drivers who gives u the finger when u "politely" ask them to move over by flashing the high beam, no it will not work |

I was just blocked by a left lane blocker on the highway this morning. dude wanted to go in the left lane, so i let him, and he thanks me by driving 80 when everyones going 100. after getting fed up i start high beaming the guy constantly while not-really-not-tail-gating. he got the hint and slowly accelerated. i will try the highbeam + signal over technique one of these days. it sounds very promising |
I do it all the time going up the cut. Doesn't work too often. |
Sounds good, but i've never heard of it, and prior to today I wouldn't have had know what I would be doing to the guy in front |
Someone should make a big email about unofficial driving rules and start a chain email! |
i dont think ppl here know what that means, prolly think ur a dumb asshole who forgot you had your signals on while tailgating them. But im in china atm and ppl just blink towards the center and flash their headlights, then the car infront gtfo. If the head light doesnt move them, they start honking when they get close, if that fails, they pass on the right and spit out the window while driving by. HAHA. i forgot it took some time adjusting to driving here after driving in america lol. |

Seems like other countries use the signal towards the centre trick too. On city streets it seems to work, but it makes the people behind me move over instead :D |
I do this all the time driving in China. In most cases it works like a charm. |
A lot of drivers don't know "slower vehicle keep right" is part of the MVA, and not a preference. They think they are suggested to do so, and not obligated to. Them dumbfucks shouldn't even be on the road. |
i've tried the european "signal" to pass.. hasnt worked.. yet.. high-beaming has worked for me, or they just notice me driving up behind them quickly. i do the hazard to warm or sudden stops or cops ahead thing. |
i usually just turn my high beam on and off hoping they get the message |
we need LED screens infront of our cars so we can tell people infront of us things. Not just to GTFO of the left lane, but also that ur breaklights are broken, gas cover is open etc. etc. Wouldn't that make things so much better. |
This is pretty common in Europe if I remember correctly. Another one is flashing the highbeams. Over there it means "Let me pass", but unfortunately the idiots here seem to equate it with getting the finger. This is why German cars give you a "flash" option (ie pulling the stick towards you) on top of "high beam" (pushing the stick away from you). To be honest, I don't know why ICBC just doesn't issue a blanket "Keep right except to pass" rule on ALL highways (actual highways, not their definition) here. |

it worked for me a few times, but I did that a few years ago. what really works are probably the stobes that the police use on top of their vehicles. too bad its illegal haha |
coming back from seattle... people hogging the passing lane... all BC plates... How typical... in europe using the turn signal is about the rudest thing you can do... and its generally when the person in front is oblivious... a quick flash of the lights is generally enough over there... oh thats right... they have driver training... u don't just learn how to pass the test... |
