Bank gave extra $100,000 into my gf's account

She bought a place and clicked to transfer ~100,000 from her savings to the other bank. She clicked on it and it gave her some error so she did it again. 10 minutes later she had double the amount in her bank.

She told the bank about it and they said thanks, most people wouldn't have said anything and neither bank has any clue why, how or where the 2nd amount came from.

I support her decision and I advised her to do it but I'm just curious if it's legal if you don't.. I guess the least you would have to do is claim it on taxes?

JSALES 06-29-2009 03:06 PM

i think it's illegal if you take it

skyxx 06-29-2009 03:07 PM

Funny how most of the money in this world is really virtual/digital. :)

Adsdeman 06-29-2009 03:09 PM

I would say they would do anything in thier power to get that money back if she didnt say anything. So good choice i think

make sure, I repeat, make sure your GF gets a letter from her bank stating that THEY made the error and SHE notified them and it HAS BEEN corrected in the bank's favor.

I would've sat on it for a while and see what happens

Gt-R R34 06-29-2009 03:28 PM

read your account agreement =)

I'm sure something in there says something like *if it aint you're, it ain't yours, give it back.*

for 100K not worth it, for 10Mill - SEEYAH.

m4k4v4li 06-29-2009 03:30 PM

shoulda just sat on it and keep the interest

KuSouL 06-29-2009 03:39 PM

i woulda just sat on it also
see what happens ~

Good on you for notifying the bank. I would've done the same thing. It's not like the bank isn't going to notice. Numbers won't balance, and they'll go hunting for it.

slammer111 06-29-2009 04:22 PM

Yeah they would've hunted her down. The least the bank could've done was give her a $20 lunch voucher or something.

You guys remember that Honger couple that fled NZ for the Motherland when they accidentally got 100x their loan amount (some $50m instead of $500k) deposited into their account? :D

ilvtofu 06-29-2009 04:43 PM

Since she was so honest, I think the banks should learn to be fair and give her something in return, seems completely ungrateful to me.

maxxxboost 06-29-2009 04:52 PM

Good choice. Eventually the banks would have reconciled their accounts and notice $100,000 missing.

Lol, i would feel so uneasy if i was transfering $100,000 for a place and have an error msg show up. .WTF!

Especially when after the error the balance read $0 and the other stayed the same!

tiger_handheld 06-29-2009 06:07 PM

I wouldve sat on it purely for 1 reason:

lets say you lose 300$ from ur account and the bank takes 3-4 weeks to do a full investigation and return the money to you. Let it be the same, let them do a full investigation to get their money back.

punkwax 06-29-2009 06:09 PM

A bank knows same day if an ATM spat out an extra $20. No chance of scoring a free 100K.

Stevie P 06-29-2009 06:40 PM

Definitely did the right thing by giving it back. Now if it was something like $10 mil... pack your bags.

you wish! most likely they will give you a free account that you can deposit unlimit amount in it? :haha:

what else do you expect the bank to do other than a simple thanks? the bank doesn't owe her anything other than making sure her credit is still in good standing as the problem wasn't caused by her. there is no way she would've be able to get away with it anyways as banks reconcile customer's account from time to time.

shenmecar 06-29-2009 08:47 PM

Good job for doing the right thing!

One of the ATM's took $40's when I was getting money out.
And it was an error, so I didn't get my full amount.

I reported to them and yet I still didn't get my $40 back.

Fucking unfair world.
