Bank gave extra $100,000 into my gf's account

She bought a place and clicked to transfer ~100,000 from her savings to the other bank. She clicked on it and it gave her some error so she did it again. 10 minutes later she had double the amount in her bank.

She told the bank about it and they said thanks, most people wouldn't have said anything and neither bank has any clue why, how or where the 2nd amount came from.

I support her decision and I advised her to do it but I'm just curious if it's legal if you don't.. I guess the least you would have to do is claim it on taxes?

Funny how most of the money in this world is really virtual/digital.

make sure, I repeat, make sure your GF gets a letter from her bank stating that THEY made the error and SHE notified them and it HAS BEEN corrected in the bank's favor.

Good on you for notifying the bank. I would've done the same thing. It's not like the bank isn't going to notice. Numbers won't balance, and they'll go hunting for it.

Yeah they would've hunted her down. The least the bank could've done was give her a $20 lunch voucher or something.

You guys remember that Honger couple that fled NZ for the Motherland when they accidentally got 100x their loan amount (some $50m instead of $500k) deposited into their account?

Since she was so honest, I think the banks should learn to be fair and give her something in return, seems completely ungrateful to me.

Good choice. Eventually the banks would have reconciled their accounts and notice $100,000 missing.

Lol, i would feel so uneasy if i was transfering $100,000 for a place and have an error msg show up. .WTF!

Especially when after the error the balance read $0 and the other stayed the same!

I wouldve sat on it purely for 1 reason:

lets say you lose 300$ from ur account and the bank takes 3-4 weeks to do a full investigation and return the money to you. Let it be the same, let them do a full investigation to get their money back.

A bank knows same day if an ATM spat out an extra $20. No chance of scoring a free 100K.

Definitely did the right thing by giving it back. Now if it was something like $10 mil... pack your bags.

what else do you expect the bank to do other than a simple thanks? the bank doesn't owe her anything other than making sure her credit is still in good standing as the problem wasn't caused by her. there is no way she would've be able to get away with it anyways as banks reconcile customer's account from time to time.

One of the ATM's took $40's when I was getting money out.
And it was an error, so I didn't get my full amount.

I reported to them and yet I still didn't get my $40 back.

Fucking unfair world.
