I think it has to do with the fact that it's expensive and is a huge ego boost kinda thing....it is also really hard to cook and takes a long time just to make 1 dish....

Why do you think people always take their clients out for shark fin soup or what have you?? Because it's the most expensive on the meul....It's all about having 'face'.....=\

this thread reminded me how i have been meaning to try the shark fin soup at sun sui wah, unless you guys got any other suggestions for it around here :)

Honestly, after watching this documentary I have stopped eating shark fin soup. But my parents are too traditional so they still eat it, but only at partys where they have to show face so they eat it so they won't disrespect the host. But otherwise, my parents don't eat it anymore because I've educated them.

Read the first post, that was what started the discussion, although I doubt neone who posted including myself bothered...

I'm on the fence, I'll never buy it but I'll have it if it's offered. Aren't we all a part of nature and the ecosystem? If a species can't adapt to a new environment or a new predator, don't they go extinct? It's the way it's been before humans and it's the way it'll be long after we're gone.

rslater 07-17-2009 06:27 PM

Seriously how do you guys compare the slaughter of chickens and cows to sharks? Chickens and cows are being bred for slaughtering. They have a minimal environmental impact compared to the slaughtering of sharks. The argument made by the documentary and by those advising people to stop eating shark fin soup is not the fact that sharks are being killed much like cows and chickens, but rather its disastrous environmental impact that it's having on our ecosystem.

Every time we eat chickens and cows were localizing the slaughtering and the breeding of them. Sharks are taken over a vast territory to which is affecting the ecosystem in far greater lengths. Just stop arguing that their is no difference between sharks and cows, because their clearly is.

And while sharks are slaughtered for one fin on their backs, almost the whole body's of cows and chickens are being used to feed millions of people. I do agree that cows/chickens use alot more grain and water, decreasing its beneifit to feed the world, but the killing of sharks have little to no beneifit for society.

the thing with sharks and bears is that they never had a predator since they have existed. they have always been top dog. and im also sure that in the food chain. no animal just takes one part of another animal in mass quantities and then tosses the rest away. humans will be the end of the earth so nothing will go on after we're extinct lol.

Okay you shouldnt be driving then, cause that's not a necessity either.

Want to get cremated when you die? Nope cant do that too..it's gonna affect our ecosystem.

I dont see what the big deal is.

The average Chinese doesnt eat that much shark fin soup anyways.

Unless you're rich you'd be only eating that a few times a year.

It's a high end delicacy..people cant afford to eat that shit daily.

Yes a shark fin is only a small part of the shark's body and leaving it to rot is a waste..but it's a delicacy no one's gonna give that up.

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-17-2009 07:25 PM

who cares, keep eating keep fucking

Blue92 07-17-2009 10:14 PM

Yet another RS thread that scares me... are people really so incapable of legitimate debate? Of course this post will get ignored, as most posts that aren't completely over the top normally do, but I can't help but feel upset with people in general and their lack of willingness to listen to other points of view with an open mind.

Obviously, the Chinese are not going to give up one of their "delicacies" over night, nor should we really expect them too. As has been pointed out, albeit rather crudely, most peoples would take offense to other groups telling them what they can and cannot eat. However, with that said, the "nom nom nomer's" should realize that perhaps there are large environmental impacts from these practices and maybe there are better ways of going about putting shark fin soup on the table (ie. regulated fishing practices, shark farms, etc.)

I believe the OP may have struck a cord when TELLING other members not to eat shark products, perhaps he/she would have been better off simply stating the facts. But, this is RS, and everyone has to make a splash... =P

The other types is where you are actually eating the shark fin like a bowl of noodle....there is a big difference in texture and ppl can definitely tell if you are not using real shark fin. Soup they use in this is a lot thinner too. And of course it costs a lot more.

Not a fan of shark-fin, but then how it it really different from everything else we slaughter and eat?
- Chicken get their beaks cut off live
- Pigs raise in overcrowded facilities, being breed for the sole purpose to be slaughtered and never seeing daylight in their entire life.
- Lobster and seafood suffer weeks of hell during transportation before they are then boiled alive.
- Fishes are skinned and gutted alive (try imagine someone doing that to you)
- We waste thousands acre of lands and energy to raise small quantity of meat - lands and energy that could've been used to feed 10x more people by growing basic crops.

You forgot chickens are cut upside down and then hanged on a conveyor belt and bleed to death and cows being raised in small areas where they can't even manuever more than 3 feet. There's way worst shiet that we do.

But the thing with sharks is that they are at the top of the food chain, and every hour, it's estimated that 10,000 sharks are killed just for their fin and the shark population has decreased by 80% or something. It's a huge problem because they are the top of the ocean food chain and keep all the other species in balance and its fucking up the ocean ecosystem which costs over the long run.

iEatClams 07-18-2009 01:24 AM

^ edit, it could costs us money over the long run if it affects fish supplies and algae or planket - which affects CO2.

Vege 07-18-2009 08:21 AM

The biggest issue is that the current hunting of sharks is unsustainable. You can't compare this to domesticated or farmed species because we have already figured out how to breed and keep those populations going. Will we ever run out of chickens? No. will we ever run out of sharks the way we are going? Yes. Sharks reproduce maybe once or twice in a year. Some even less. Just do the math and you can see where shark populations are headed.

For those who think losing sharks to extinction is not a big deal, think of cutting out a top predator from the food chain. Every species below it will be affected. Sharks have been around 200 million years and to be wiped out by humans who have been around ~250000 years is just sad.

svelt 07-18-2009 10:09 AM

See Holocene extinction event for proponents of "natural cycle of evolution" and thinking that the ecosystem will adapt itself. Sure it will, if we allow it, and if you don't care about the environment or global sustainability that's fine, you're amongst many. But part of the rationale of this is that sharks serve as an important apex predator in the ocean that moderates populations of other species and plankton consumption; the extinction of sharks would have far reaching consequences for ocean interactions. It's less about PETA (which I couldn't care less for) and more about not pillaging, slaughtering and dominating every resource we come across as we've done for thousands of years.

I don't get why people even like shark fin soup. It's another one of those shitty luxury goods from Asia that has limited health benefits (can hurt your sperm due to mercury and PCB contents. And no, it can't cure cancer), tastes rather plain (you only think it tastes good because it costs money and it's rare to eat it. It's essentially salty water with tougher vermicelli), is very expensive (isn't it like $20 for a bowl?) and people order it to display wealth and as a status symbol without paying heed to what they're taking from the world. Fuck shark fin soup.

thank you for having a brain

there is a HUGE difference between trying to compare eating sharks and eating chickens/pigs/cows

now if you have a problem with the way those animals are breed and slaughtered then enjoy your carrots

Some of the reply's just boggle my mind but everyone has their opinion and should stick with it. Anyway you cant compare tree's being cut down to sharks being wasted, baby tree's get replanted where the big tree was so the cycle continues, when a shark is killed you cant replant it... can you?
