Just to cover your own ass. Report it to ICBC then settle it privately. But honestly I'd bring it to the shop. It's not your fault right?. If it was not your fault at all then just go through ICBC.

well you cant exactly see if theres frame damage with the bumper still on... i guess your best bet would be tomorrow at the shop. since you can't take the bumper off yourself

looks like the end panel took a hit too. Looks repairable with a pull & square instead of replacing it. Potential for more hidden damage. ICBC it *which you already did*. That way he won't have anything to gripe about when the repair bill goes past the $700, which it will.

Have him settle privately with ICBC after, it's also the fairest way in dealing with this for BOTH parties.

You did the right thing. You can't lose...when you're not at fault. You're only doing him a favour by not reporting it so that his insurance rates don't go up. However, when it comes to your car, you have to look out for #1, and thats you.

However, I must admit when my car got rear ended, I offered to let it settle privately only because there was so little damage. Just a small hole made by the license plate bolt from the car that hit me. I took it to a body shop, they said $400, I told the other drive and she paid up. Done and done.

i'd rather have a $700 claim showing in my car's history than later finding out that my car has other issues to be addressed. maybe other damages that aren't noticeable until like a month or so. Get yourself covered since the guy won't be paying the damage that shows up the day after your car is repaired.

LoL.. I think i started this whole off topic thing. LOL...

anyways.. the damage could go over $700 by a bit since you might want to repaint some area (the white line thingy on the bumper).

That white line is a crack unfortunately, and I'm hoping that I get a new bumper

obviously he doesnt want his insurance to go back to 0%

if it costs $1000 to fix, ask for $2000 or else go to icbc.

i did the same thing when i was younger, figure i'll help the guy out. it was a total headache on my side, the guy was total shady. now that i'm older and wiser i'd never do it again. totally in your best interest to report it to icbc and let them handle it. not worth all the drama.

Draft being a mod you should really sticky this. NEVER EVER settle outside of ICBC, because icbc offers a pay the cost of the claim to the person at fault before they ding their premuim. This is the only gauranteed way things will be fixed to any suitable standard (icbc's hopefully)

I blame the K&N air filter!

but yea I can't believe I didn't say it but currently ICBC is your friend (hard to imagine huh?) but yea now that you got a claim, best thing to do is to find a good place to get it fixed.... somewhere that will paint the bumper evenly

damage under 2k doesn't count against the car anyways (if you try to sell it later it's still accident free) so trying to not go through ICBC just to protect your car's history is dumb. go through ICBC. he pays ICBC for the bill, his insurance is not effected.

That's not entirely true. You don't have to disclose an accident claim under $2000. But, a claim under $2000 will still show up on an ICBC check/carproof/carfax.

I did get all of his info, and I did phone into ICBC. I didnt report the claim YET, but I did ask the lady to make a note that I called in about it (just in case he decided to try to call in and turn it around on me somehow)

And that one night that I went out and got rear ended, I was just going out to get gas and I had left my phone at home, so I had no camera on me.

But does anyone have any opinions on if the frame itself is damaged?
Thats all this thread is really for
It doesn't look like the frame itself is damaged - it appears the rear end panel has been pushed in slightly - probably a few hours of repair + paint.

Looks like a $1200-$1300 hit in total.

the paint shouldn't be too expensive since it's not premium. But you're right, the paint job is going to still be pricy regardless of premium or not..

I think the cost will end up somwhere $800-$900, if he's not getting a brand new bumper piece.

So I took it to the bodyshop today, they think I'll end up getting a new bumper, the rear panel will have to be straightened out as well

I have no idea what the cost will be, but I'm not paying it so....

I backed into a guy in a parking lot this past winter, with one of the horrible blizzards we got hit with. I told him to take it to the dealership, and I'd pay for it. Cost me $650 for a dented fender and a corner light... but ICBC was never involved.

There is no harm in letting the guy try and do the right thing his own way... but if you get the sense it's going sideways or you're suddenly being ignored - then you call ICBC and fuck him.

Thought I'd give a quick update:

Got my car back today, everything looks like new. Apparently my bumper wasnt actually cracked. No complaints about the paint match, I cant tell the difference but they guarantee 100% match anyway

My only gripe is that it seems there is less gap between the top of my bumper and bottom of the trunk lid. It feels like there's less "give" when I close my trunk, I cant tell if the trunk lid actually comes in contact with the bumper when I close the trunk or not..

Other than that, no complaints
Terry said total came to about $24xx.xx
Good thing I went through ICBC, thanks to RS!

^ Not sure about your car, but many cars have adjustable rubber stops that you can screw in or out. Either DIY or have the dealer do it for a few bucks. Normally they'd be doing it on the assembly line anyways, and it wouldn't necessarily mean that your parts don't fit perfectly.

Did they replace the trunk-lid weatherstrip? If it's new, it could result in less "give" when closing the trunk until the weatherstrip is worked in a bit.

!
You can take it back to the shop and they can readjust it. Most likely because the trunk lock latch was taken off and when they put it back in they didn't re-adjust it. It's a pretty simple fix. If the trunk lid did come in contact with the bumper, you would know, cause it would mark up the bumper.

Just go through ICBC, no need to take unnecessary risk.

And when you do sell the car, its probably best to disclose any accidents anyways and have the new buyer know that they were properly repaired.
