| Airmiles or Aeroplan?
Which one do you collect and why?
If you collect both, are you more focused on one of the plans or not?
I've been collecting airmiles mostly but I'm considering a switch to aeroplan now since I'm starting to fly a little bit more.

I collect Aeroplan points. It's not the greatest plan but with my CIBC Aerogold / Infinite card and the flying I do I rack up about 100,000 aeroplan points a year. If you're smart about how you book your rewards, you can reduce the fuel surcharges big time and get some decent flights.. they rape you with fuel surcharges though if you're flying completely on AC steel.

I personally collect AMs,
There is a whole thread on RFD that shows what items to get at safeway to collect AMs, getting around .2 cents per AM.

I'd go with Airmiles....I honestly don't know how much longer Aeroplan is going to last.
Last I heard, they aren't doing too well, and if they ever tank, who knows what's going to happen with your points.

Airmiles! Lots of sponsors, programs and coupons to help you accumulate points, especially if you're traveling.

I like airmiles because I buy so much gas every month.

I don't see why you wouldn't collect both?
- Aeroplan for business travel.
- Air Miles when you decide you need something at Safeway, Home Depot, etc.

Aeroplan points r pretty secure - its the affiliated airline, air canada, that has been and remains, close to the edge.

Airmiles is great in that you can collect them through many more options, but the only airline that offers them is NWA for flights between the US and Canada. Aeroplan on the other hand is given out on any airline affiliated with the Star Alliance...and not much else in terms of daily spending besides the credit cards.

Aeroplan
In 2 years I have earned 5 flights (25K each roundtrip in Canada) with Aeroplan.
In 10 years I have earned 1 flight with AirMiles.
In 2 years I earned 1 flight with my Scotiabnk Visa (similar to RBC Avion).
The only downside to Aeroplan is when you're allowed to use it. I wanted to go away for Thanksgiving, yet most of the 25K flights are gone.

I redeemed a round trip flight with my airmiles on Westjet between YVR and YYZ and they charged me $170. If I purchased this outright through Air Canada it would have been around $420 on Tango.

I have redeemed the same short-haul flight on both airmiles and aeroplan within a 2 month- period. Paid more in fees for the airmiles redemption.

(75 000 is enough for a return flight to asia) | Aeroplan/Air Canada charge a fuel surcharge on international flights.. so your return flight to asia will cost you $700 in surcharges. But if you book the flight on other Star Alliance airlines (ie. United Airlines or whatever)... the surcharges are significantly lower. You can do this by calling up the Aeroplan Centre or sometimes can even find different airlines online when booking on the Aeroplan website.
You can check out flyertalk.com 's forums for more info on it.
