Supercharger vs Turbocharger

Given the option between the two, which one do you prefer more? I'm partial toward the supercharger because I prefer the extra power throughout the full RPM range, not to mention that the sound of a twin-screw sounds sexy. I'm aware that a properly tuned snail can make more power, but having to wait for that power to kick in is a pain. lol

How about you guys and gals?

you! 07-25-2009 04:42 PM

really depends on what ur looking for here. both have their own pros/cons

sc will make good power but a turbo will make so much more despite having the same boost pressure
for me an sc doesn't give too much hassle to run as u dont need to worry about oil lines, boost issues, leaks, etc etc. u get no lag as well but the major prob with this setup is temp issues

turbo on the other hand will make more power but not until when it spools. its usually harder to tune than sc and there's a bigger risk for detonation

it all depends for me, if i were to do a lot of road racing then id pick the sc but if it was drag then id go turbo

i personally like both, but like you mentioned, love the sound of a s/c. also the ricer in my loves the psshhh of a BOV. personally i've been deciding which one to go once warranty is out since there is finally a fully tunable unit out by Hondata.

Berzerker 07-25-2009 05:33 PM

4 banger superchargers are a waste of time and money IMO. They are easy to install though (Jackson Racing Kit comes to mind) and are a fun little boost in power if your not into really big gains. I for one like the whistle of a centrifugal charger (Vortec comes to mind) at idle and low rpm around town but a twin screw at WOT sounds badass as well.

If all your talking about though is power I gotta go with a turbo on 4 bangers and leave the chargers to the big boys that can spin them.

Berz out.

Uhm. S/C and turbo both use a BOV

Umm...some cars with an AFM application use a BPV.

For my G? i want to SC, easier to install. and moreso along the lines of what i want, low-midrange oomph

SC helps the 4banger in low end torque. Not a waste at all IMO If you consider thats where the 4 banger lacks. SC is great to zip around town.

from a owner who own both a 2.0L turbo and a 1.8L supercharged car - I prefer a 2.0L turbo. A size 4 turbo 2.0L is fun and basically lag free (people might complaint that it's laggy before 3000 rpm, but it's only gonna take 1 second before you hit 3000 rpm, isn't it! The 1.8L supercharged is my daily driver and it's okay. Nothing exciting, but sometimes it's nice to have the low end torque. If I can choose, I'll pick the turbo.

why not both?

Twin-charged FTMFW!

After working on a lot of supercharged and turbocharged applications, I'd have to say the turbocharger is far superior. If sized correctly lag can be minimal and a very flat boost curve can be achieved. For some applications however, a turbo system requires a lot of work and fabrication compared to supercharger.

A centrifugal syle supercharger such as vortech don't have a lot of low or midrange power because the boost increases with rpm. They basically have linear lag until full boost, but they make the most power at peak of all the superchargers. These work well on larger displacement engines that generate a lot of torque down low, but are pretty bad in smaller engines like hondas.

The roots type superchargers such as eaton are better at generating full boost at low rpm but sacrifice top end power.

The Screw type supercharger such as a Whipple charger is a balance between the 2

eurochevy 07-26-2009 03:51 PM

roots supercharger whine is intoxicating..twin screw is alright...but roots deff my fav but i also like the turbo..doesn't sound AS good but when its spooling and bov its sexy as well

Well said, and I agree wif you or atleast most of it.

But trust me, once you go turbo, there's no going back.
You crave more power and more boost though. It's like a drug, no joke..

Good post

I personally would only think to supercharging engines with 6cyl or more. I love the sound of a supercharged VQ35 or the inline 6 from a M3.

strap on 4 turbos :)

Too much Veyron for you. =P

Jun_Y 07-26-2009 11:33 PM

you could always twin charge and be special. you just have to get the right combination

SuperSlowSS 07-27-2009 09:05 AM

Really depends where you use it. On the road, supercharger. Or maybe a turbo with little lag. Like vw 2.0t.
On the track, where you keep the rpm high... turbo. Why? go drive a 997 turbo. :D

He's right. You can buy a sync. BOV for comptech systems. You do your research.

My S/C setup will be running a BOV...

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-27-2009 02:54 PM

SC makes power thru out the entire power band

no lags, but roughly 100hp gain 80 pounds of torque gain on the easy low boost set up

as turbo can make greater power, and higher potential.

hence why u dont see any high hp cars 500hp + with a SC

Turbo will lag tho

never seen nor knew u can turbo plus SC at the same time

if so, why havent many people do this yet?

ilvtofu 07-27-2009 07:00 PM

^more parts to fix?

But isn't the Golf GT one of the first like that?

how about one of those fancy variable turbos like the 997? Don't know what they are called lol

godwin 07-27-2009 07:07 PM

It all comes down to volumetric efficiencies.

Everything in life have pros and cons..

The key is to measure, decide when in the power band you want the power and do the math,
