Last year I was on vacation during the summer so it wasn't that bad. This year I'm stuck in Vancouver...maybe I should leave every summer.

Lol, yah people in Vancouver go nuts when it comes to the weather. We get like a week of snow and people go all nuts and start buying up anything snow related, we get a few days of hot weather and people go all nuts and start buying up AC units which will end up sitting in a garage or basement next week collecting dust.

Looks like anyone wanting to buy some ac needs to line up on the day of delivery. Dad went to Home Depot and said people were lined up from the back of the store to the front, ended up selling all 180 units. They're like a new video game coming out.

got mine from airlux.ca

one of the colder units out there, but the best part is that it's local so if it breaks down after a year, you can take it back for servicing! It's currently all sold out according to the website! I got it for $450+ tax back in may!

It's worked flawlessly in the past few days! I have to use the winter blankets!

wait till the temp drops then goto costco. all those cheap fuckers will be retuning their units.

if you are ghetto like me you can macguyver a portable system from a window AC unit. normally $100 or so for a cheapo unit.

just make a cardboard enclosure for the rear half intake, run some dryer hose out a nearby window. (fresh air in) cold air intake style let the duct hang lower so you can get cooler air.

and for the aluminum fin exhaust area, again, another enclosure type setup to channel out the hot air via dryer ducting too. stick the other hose end out the window too, preferably NOT near the cold air intake. use a shorter duct (hot air rises and may be sucked into the cold air intake, lessening the effectiveness)

keep a pot or a bucket under the drain as AC units produce waste water.

put your ghetto machine on a cart of some kind and wheel it anywhere you need some LAAN HAY.

for max benefit seal up the window as best you can to keep your nice cool air from escaping. close your room door too.

send me $5 if this helps you

make sure you have sufficent airflow or you willburn your house down. no joke

Yeah there's nothing worse than getting a unit that's too weak for the size of your room. I'd rather have the unit running on half speed, cooling the room comfortably, than a dinky unit on full blast and not doing the job.

If you have the cash, get a duct free AC system installed in a few rooms. It usually costs under $3000 but it's well worth it because it'll cool down a room within minutes.

EDIT: For those of you who want one still.........Just got back from Home Depot in Langley. They just received a shipment of 10, 000 BTU portable units. I was there at around 4:30 pm and they had about 100 left. They close at 8 pm. If you cannot make it tonight, phone them to see how much is left, then go early in the morning.

The unit is called "Commercial Cool" or something like that. Made by Haier company. 5 year warranty on the compressor. $499.00

Addendum: For some people, portable units are the only choice. I lived in a house with forced air heating and could have purchased a whole house air conditioner unit. The problem was, the ducting was not the right size. It would have cost a fair chunk of money to convert to bigger ducting. Then I move to a house with radiant floor heating. Now I have no choice but to go with those ductless systems. If it's a large house, the cost is quite high. Plus they drill holes into the house where the pipes go and so on....... window models are ugly and most units will not work on horizontal sliding windows, which is what kind most West Coast houses have, without having to do some modifications. Portable units can be wheeled around and some of them actually look nice. My Sharp unit, is by far, the nicest and quietest. The Airlux unit is a bit too noisy. I just got this Commercial Cool one and it seems to be quiet and look decent. I wish they still had the 12, 000 BTU models. Anyway, I cannot stand any kind of heat and my new house is way hotter because of the way it is situated and built. Also, elderly people, especially ones with heart problems shouldn't be in a house that is remotely hot....... heat wave or not.

I don't we're going to get another heatwave like the one we had last week until next summer so no point of wasting money on a AC unit.
