Well one of my biggest issues with HST is houses which most Vancouverite's cant afford already will be subjected to the HST so instead of just the 6% gst we get the PST too now.

With the HST a house that's 1.5 million now will cost an additional $105, 000.

This only applies to "new" homes, as in just built homes. The rest aren't affected AFAIK.

Well, in the BC Liberals' defence, no government understood the sheer impact of the economic meltdown until it happened. The politicians are stuck between a rock and a hard place:

- Cut social services such as health care and other subsidies and people complain
- Raise taxes and people complain

People need to realize that there is no free lunch - you can't have lower taxes without cuts to services, or an increase in consumption taxes, user fees, etc. The restaurant industry has cried foul, but honestly, if you're spending 100/week on meals and beverages (like many yuppies), surely you can afford another 7 bucks.

FYI: The smartest decisions are seldom the most 'democratic'.

Some people don't mind the HST.

It really is how it was jammed down our throats. "we say it's going to happen, this is the date, TO BAD for any discussion."

I think you pay tax on any home over 400k weathe it's new or not. but that might be a different tax or unefected by this. not sure.

used cars will also cost 7% more. as now you don't pay PST from private sale used cars.

I'm not in favour of HST but thats not how it happened at all. The maritimes already has it and Ontario is bringing it in. The Federal Government went to Campell and said we'll give you 1.6 billion if you impliment this tax. Whether or not they actually offererd them this before or after the election who really knows but either way it's a bit sketchy.

Again I'm not a fan of the tax but you're giving the Liberals way to much credit making the assumption they pulled this out of their ass to make up for a shortfall.

From what I've heard, yes you pay. So find a place that finishes before July 2010 lol.

I was also reading that you will get tax breaks or a refund for house purchases up to $400K? Anything over you pay the HST for it? Is this true?
