Vancouver Island is like this, I'll drive anywhere on the island over taking a ferry to the mainland. Doesn't help that the ferry isn't exactly cheap either.

I don't live in richmond but i do find it exists, why do ppl hate crossing the bridge so much? the traffic isn't so bad most of the time neways...

There are actually alot of "massage" girls in richmond too. Mainly around the garden city and kwantlen condo area. dont ask why i know.

monkeywrench 08-26-2009 12:02 AM

it really depends where you live in richmond which makes you think that way.

m4k4v4li 08-26-2009 02:30 AM

i've lived in richmond for most of my life but i go downtown/westside/burnaby all the time....but i never go to surrey, ever. i dont even know where surrey is near

Heh heh I feel the same way. I know vancouver, richmond, coquitlam, fraser valley, most of burnaby and new west.

But when it comes to Surrey.... I get too confused. I've driven there many times but need navigation to figure it out. Never really hung out there. Had an ex gf that lived there and I had to get a buddy to go with me to drive her home and back. LOL

As of the present.... I think I'm in the "bubble". I used to commute downtown almost daily, worked all across lower mainland so didn't mean much to drive 15-20 mins. Now if I have to drive over 10 mins I get hesitant. LOL

I think it has more with being lazy than anything else, oh and the damn traffic because of the construction everywhere pisses me off and causes huge delays. Even my old shortcuts are blocked with construction. 5 min drives now because 10-15mins. Ugh.

But I commute to Burnaby, Richmond, and Downtown everyday. It doesn't really matter to me. The only problem for me is when I have to drive to No 2 and Steveson to chill at my friends house. It's facing the water, so it takes a good 45 minutes to get there from East Van (Spirited driving)

Have you tried taking Knight -> 91 West -> 99 South?

I can get from the Knight St Bridge @ Bridgeport to Steveston Hwy portion in like 5 mins. Getting to No. 2 from there is kinda far though.

murd0c 08-26-2009 06:58 AM

I laugh about how people bitch and complain about how surrey is such a bad place I never want to
Go there. After reading this I feel the same way about richmond I can't said going there
I swear sometimes it feels like a different country after crossing the alex fraser. Personally I
Think surrey is a better place, richmond is just way to compact the people have no respect from driving
On the road to walking in the mall. Not only that look at all these recent car breakins richmond
Is getting to be worse then surrey.

SkinnyPupp 08-26-2009 07:06 AM

All the suburbs of GVA are the same type of shithole, with the same shitty drivers and the same shitty crime rate. I hate all this "surrey vs richmond vs burnaby" bullshit. It all sucks pretty much, get over it and move to British Properties or something :lol

Z3guy 08-26-2009 07:18 AM

Greater Vancouver is less of a big city like Toronto or Mtl and more of a cluster of "villages". Bottomline, most GVRD people hate bridges and tunnels. Heck, I have buddies who live in Kits but think it is too long of a drive to go downtown. I live in Vancouver and anywhere over 15mins traveling is considered far for me....I guess I am a jaded vancouverite.

Sodium 08-26-2009 08:22 AM

The thing that scares me with Richmond is that you can not know the English alpahbets....and be able to survive. It's pretty much one big China town....minus the tourists.

hk20000 08-26-2009 08:32 AM

All China towns have tourists, so it's part of the plan.

Even car tuning shops are everywhere in the North of Richmond eh. :D Junkyard in Mitchell Island, machine shop in Westminster/no.7 auto auction on Westminster/no.8. Engine shops in Steveston/ no.5. 2 Canadian Tires and 2 Lordcos, NAPA VAP in such a small area too.

it's a car guys' town.

as to the guy who drives to steveston for fish and chips, hookers on main st ... i don't mind people doing that on occasion, butwhy waste all that gas when you can get something that is 95% as good in your own neighbourhood?

To you it's a waste of gas. To me, it's enjoying everything the lower mainland has to offer.

disagree... richmond doesnt have everything. if you want to shop, theres nowhere to go. if you want to go drinking without being surrounded by fobs, nowhere. clubbing, nowhere. food wise, lots of chinese food, but vancouver kills it for variety. i used to live in vancouver this is my first year in richmond. it hasnt been bad but i still miss living in van. :(

Richmond Center has a good number and variety of shops... I'd say it's the third best mall in the GVRD after Metrotown and Coq Center in terms of selection and variety of shops. Oakridge and Pac Center is all higher-end clothing/womens shops, Brentwood just has a bunch of nothing... Granted I haven't been shopping in any Surrey malls lol.

True Vancouver kills Richmond in types of different restaurants.

taylor192 08-26-2009 09:41 AM

Its not just Richmond.

Most nights/weekends I don't go further than 13 blocks from home (I live 13 blocks from Kits beach) cause:

within 6 blocks there are 4 sushi and several restaurants, 2 pubs, a liquor store, a movie store, 2 grocery stores, London Drugs, Fitness World, Tim Hortons and other coffee shops, a huge park, bowling, ...

within 13 blocks there are 2 movie theatres, beach, pool, shopping, ...

My car has 6000kms on it in 10 months living here. There are lots of great things to do that require driving, yet its not like I climb grouse, blade Stanley park, PNE, nightmarket, VAG, ... every week.
I've been here 10 months and haven't seen Surrey, MR, PoCo, Coq, NW, ... cause there's no need, what is there in those cities that I don't have within 13 blocks of my condo?

q0192837465 08-26-2009 09:42 AM

i like driving but i dun like to pay for gas. I guess the price of gas is inversely proportional to the distance ppl r willing to travel.

hotjoint 08-26-2009 09:43 AM

I live in surrey and drive everywhere, my lazy fuckin friends in richmond and vancouver come here once in a blue moon

unit 08-26-2009 09:54 AM

thats cause when u live in surrey you kinda have to. i used to live there too my car did not love me after all the hwy driving i did. although now i find myself driving out to surrey/coquitlam more often (friends/family).

only thing my van friends came to surrey for was station pub (best pub ever).

CorneringArtist 08-26-2009 10:07 AM

After going to Richmond for basically the fourth time in my life (no car and transit is the only way I get around at the moment), I would honestly rather live there than where I am in Surrey. With the Canada Line in, pretty much everything is accessible, and it seems like you're close to anything you need. That, and my area is filled with 14 year old G-kids. But in reality, I live in an area where everything is pretty close, Richmond just has short distances between places.
