"Richmond-bubble" phenomenon...

Anybody other Richmonders have this?

It's when you live in Richmond, and think it's a major pain in the ass to go anywhere that requires you to take a bridge, yet you'd gladly take the same amount of time to drive from East Richmond to Steveston.

For instance, you see a car on Craigslist you wanna check out but you find out it's in Burnaby and you kinda balk at contacting them. But then you find a similar car located at the opposite side of Richmond and would take 20 minutes to drive to, and happily shoot them off an email.

Just curious...

It doesn't take 20 minutes to get to Burnaby from Richmond. It takes that long or longer just to cross Knight St bridge.

This phenomena doesn't just apply to Richmond-ites. It applies to people from a variety of places that just don't get out a lot.

I commute from Surrey to Richmond everyday and many of my close friends live all around the lower mainland. My car, bought brand new in March 2007 has 108,000kms already. So perhaps I am coming from the opposite extreme.

However, the mentality that one can't leave their little city, limits how much awesome stuff they are missing out on in the lower mainland. A nice walk and some fish & chips on white rock beach, ice cream at steveston, butter chicken on main st, hookers on kingsway etc etc.

To me, the lower mainland is one big city. Shit like tolls on every bridge scare me because I'm going to go fucking broke. But that won't change how I much I enjoy where I live and limit me to what's around the corner.

All of my friends are in Richmond. Except for like 2.
One never goes out, and the other one disappears halfway through the night and nobody knows where he goes.

But I commute to Burnaby, Richmond, and Downtown everyday. It doesn't really matter to me. The only problem for me is when I have to drive to No 2 and Steveson to chill at my friends house. It's facing the water, so it takes a good 45 minutes to get there from East Van (Spirited driving)

What's there to know? Everything is laid out in a grid, with pretty much equal distances between each block.

I can always expect to have people try to merge into my lane without a shoulder check in Richmond.

When I lived downtown I was always willing to drive anywhere but now that I live in Surrey I can't be bothered to leave my immediate area. I guess I've got the Surrey Bubble effect.

My mom is the opposite. She is perfectly content driving in Richmond, but wouldn't dare drive in Vancouver.

Your mother in law is chinese right?

There's not much that Richmond doesn't have so that's probably why she never leaves Richmond.

I think the only time I'd ever leave Richmond (if I lived there) would be to go downtown for clubbing/canucks and that's about it. Richmond basically has everything you need.

movies - riverport
food - everywhere
malls - aberdeen/yaohan/richmond centre
groceries - save ons/superstore etc

Asian c-lais have this weird thinking, they think the wind will blow their car off the bridge if they drive faster than city speed limit

Also they suck at counting...if you just past 46th ave, and you see 45th ave ahead...then 41st ave should be the next next next intersection, but they always freak out and ask the passengers where the fuck is 41st.

True, but when I lived in Richmond for almost 10 years, I left the city often, for more than just Canucks games. I guess for moms it doesn't matter.

exactly what ch28 said. richmond has EVERYTHING. no need to go anywhere. i live in vancouver close to richmond, and that is where i go all the time. downtown is further, pay parking, the people all think they are better than you ...

as to the guy who drives to steveston for fish and chips, hookers on main st ... i don't mind people doing that on occasion, butwhy waste all that gas when you can get something that is 95% as good in your own neighbourhood?
