You're fighting an uphill battle on a subject you know nothing about.
Kev | So in summary Surrey has:
Indians
Reptiles
Wave pool
Lots of softball diamonds
Beaches not as good as Vancouver
Some country club I'll never use
Still not worth the drive. Keep trying.

| Gasp! You have stores there, a beach, and movie theatres! How fucking unique. I heard Chilliwack has all the same shit. But you wouldn't know, because you haven't left your 13 block radius since moving here from the giant shit hole that is Ontario. Did you grow up on a farm in Thunder Bay or something? You act like a London Drugs is some luxury.
It's too bad because your clapped out C-Class hatchback would look at home among all the Escalades and Corsicas in Surrey.
Keep digging dumb fuck.

now I'll agree that richmond has a bubble, but it keeps more people out than in.
If I need something I'll leave squam for it no problem, driving over an hour isn't a huge deal, but dealing with places like burnaby or north van, or even langley, surrey and the tri-cities shit makes some sort of sense. Streets are labelled and as long as you have a general idea of where you're going, you'll find it, and safely.
then we have richmond. fuck. I can get to the airport no problem, there's enough signs even the americans can figure it out if they need to get back from whistler. anything else. fuck it. I don't know how anyone can drive in richmond and not get lost every 4kms. Nothing makes sense down there! throw in a bridge and it gets even worse. You also have to worry about the c-lais, which is never a nice feeling.
I mapquested the RS meet and still got lost. I got to the bridge without incident, but then got slighly confused and drove under the speed limit to my destination after 4 wrong turns. I've been there 3 times before and still managed to get lost.
I think the main point people are missing here, is that once richmond people leave richmond, they have a 4% chance of finding home again, so they don't risk it. | dude are u serious? how hard is 1 road, 2 road, 3 road, 4 road, 5 road? with a road or two in between each? It's like a smaller vancouver...or any city for that matter..

I get lost more in Richmond than I do in Downtown.
Also, did you notice that when you go Downtown, you'll always spot out the Non-Lower Mainlanders in an instant?
Girls from the Tri Cities or Richmond dress extra nice or extra slutty. Girls from Vancouver dress normally as if it was another night out. I'm talking tiny purses, skimpy dresses and heels so tiny it looks like it's gonna snap at any moment.
Guys: Loud as fuck, scrubbed right out, or in an random suit. And they look more Metro than the gay guys on Davie.
It's at the point where it looks like these people have never left Surrey, Coquitlam, or Richmond. They look at Vancouver like it's all fancy and see everything in a new light.

I commute from Surrey to Richmond everyday and many of my close friends live all around the lower mainland. My car, bought brand new in March 2007 has 108,000kms already. So perhaps I am coming from the opposite extreme.
However, the mentality that one can't leave their little city, limits how much awesome stuff they are missing out on in the lower mainland. A nice walk and some fish & chips on white rock beach, ice cream at steveston, butter chicken on main st, hookers on kingsway etc etc.
To me, the lower mainland is one big city. Shit like tolls on every bridge scare me because I'm going to go fucking broke. But that won't change how I much I enjoy where I live and limit me to what's around the corner.

Surrey probably has everything I listed too, yet I'd have to walk more than 13 blocks to get to it, thus why should I leave my bubble when its so nice? I did manage to climb Grouse this weekend, that's more than 13 blocks away. Quote:

The only phenomenon I have is Anti-downtown.
I absolutely dispise that place.
It's only good for work. I go there during the day time, I make money, I come home.
Too crowded, driving there sucks, parking is expensive, etc
I live in vancouver, I travel everywhere, wherever it's convienent based on distance.
But I go to Richmond a lot just because it's flat and there's long stretches of road (easy on the gas) and parking is free.
