I grew up on the farm side of Richmond by 5 and Blundell so it was ditches on both sides of the road, a septic tank that had to be drained once a year, and gravel sidewalks while dump trucks and 18 wheelers drove by. One year a younger classmate actually got run over by a 18 wheeler when she chased after her lunch box which she had inadvertently thrown on the road. I wasn't old enough yet to really register what it meant for someone to die so the school assembly where they explained what had happened went right over my head. Speaking of the Asian invasion of Richmond, my first exposure to a new immigrant was when a classmate from China showed up and he had a Chinese name. Yue Cheng! WTF man - the rest of us Canadian born Chinks had whitey names - Harry, David, Eric, Kelly, Leslie, Norman. In the 80's using your Chinese name was not cool bro! Then a few years later the Western names started showing up but they were like Fanny, Newton, Penny, Priscilla etc. Names out of the Charlie Murphy Prince skit! |
I don’t know if this was normal, but in my elementary school (Diefenbaker) the principal could change their names or pick an English name for them upon enrollment??? This one guy came from HK and just recently he told me this story that his Chinese name was Dick On and the principal said no that’s not going to work for you here and wrote Dickens on his paperwork and that literally became his legal Canadian name after, still his name to this day lol |
^ "colonialism" ... but in this case, principal got the boy's back and saved him a lifetime of harassment and embarrasment. |
I remember when I came here, shit closed early on Saturdays and weren't even open on Sundays. My mom complained that there's nothing to do on Sunday. The last couple of years when my parents visited HK, they were complaining the malls didn't open until 11am and there's nothing to do compared to Vancouver. Oh how the turntables. |
All posters here on RS now remember the days in Vancouver (all of Canada really) of stores closing on Sundays. And people would find things to do like parks, beaches, hikes, bike ride, hangout with friends, restaurants, etc. |
Oh it's wayyyyy past that... that might have ben true in the early 2000's... now it's like good luck getting your spouse and your kids off the phone... my sister doesn't even go to the mall at all, kids won't put down their fuckin ipad or switch. My nephew at 13 I heard just decided it might be fun o ride a bicycle around with his friends and tried it and had a blast... see if that lasts or propagates into something but wow just trying to get them off a couch is like pulling teeth. |
"Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy" Which was Sunday, hence the closures. |
Back then you were supposed to attend church like a good Christian. Then mom was supposed to head home and get the big Sunday dinner started. Thank god the godless Chinese put an end to that. |

They've scaled back since from peak opening hours. T&T is only open till 10 now. Walmart recently changed their hours and closes at 10 as well. Superstore revised it to 10 from 11. Metrotown used to keep the mall open till 11pm for most of Dec. Last year I think was only the final week, probably lots of pushback from the tenants. All the asian malls close at 7 now, many of the tenants are closed before that. |

It's interesting the amount of churches in richmond, every no # road has one per second block. Then on No 5 there's like every religion places of worship there. That farm at the end of Stevenson beside the dyke with chickens and cows, he probably received countless $10M+ offers but said no. |
They don't call #5 road highway to heaven for no reason. Honestly, I rather there be a place of worship (whichever religion) than monster houses on farm lands. |
For those too young to know what HWY 1 & Cassiar looked like pre-tunnel, here you go: https://i.imgur.com/WjDYuvS.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/GkxJICu.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/DHrNZ1M.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/V543K6l.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/pZdr21x.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/PZFy2bJ.jpeg |
