In this July 1, 2003 file photo, Callie Rogers from Cockermouth in Cumbria is seen after she won £1.9 million in the U.K.'s National Lottery. Callie Rogers, now 22, told the News of the World that she has just £20,000 left of the jackpot she won six years ago. Most of the £250,000 she had wasted on cocaine - 'a nasty evil drug' - had been for an ex who was addicted to it, she said.

Stop us if this sounds familiar: A very lucky person wins the lottery and expects life to change for the better, but instead, things go horribly wrong. It's a story as old as the hills, but each time it happens, it causes a huge commotion in Search. The latest "victim" of sudden wealth is a young woman from the U.K. who won millions of bucks several years ago, only to lose the vast majority of it shortly thereafter.

Callie Rogers was just 16 when she won a whopping $3 million in the lottery. Six years later, she reports that she blew untold sums on drugs, partying, exotic cars, and breast implants. A staggering $730,000 went to designer clothes alone, Ms. Rogers explains in an article from AOL. Says Rogers: "I honestly wish I'd never won the lottery money — and knowing what I know now I should have just given it all back to them." She's currently left with around $32,000.

In these trying economic times, Ms. Rogers will likely find little sympathy. Still, it's worth noting that she's hardly the first big winner who wished she'd never bought a ticket. There is such a thing as the lottery curse: As mentioned in a previous Buzz Log, there are numerous cases of lotto winners getting divorced due to stress and losing everything from poor investments. A few have even died at the hands of greedy relatives. A 2007 article from ABC will fill you in on a few more examples.

Knowing she's not the first jackpot winner to suffer hardship won't make her life any easier. But perhaps Ms. Rogers can take some comfort from the fact that there are others out there with eerily similar stories: They won big then lost big, and often wish they'd never even played.

Doesn't really surprise me - a 16 yr old wouldn't have any sort of financial discipline. I'm surprised her parents didn't do anything to teach her some life skills. Then again, the stats for many lottery winners is pretty bad - isn't it something like >50% lose their fortune in a few years?

Wow she actually looked good in that picture. I wonder if she looked great now. Anyway, life is tough when you're young....

The ex boyfriend of Lotto winner Callie Rogers has been jailed for dealing cocaine following a raid on her home.

Ryan Thompson, 20, had cocaine with a street value of £5,000 stashed in the millionaire’s home in Solway View, Sunny Hill, Whitehaven, when police raided it on December 3.

He also had £2,500 hidden in clothing under the sofa.

Drugs paraphernalia including electronic scales, plastic bags, two mobile phones and a black book containing the names and phone numbers of debtors was also found at the house.

Carlisle Crown Court was told that Miss Rogers, who was initially arrested in the drugs bust but later released without charge, knew nothing of Thompson’s dealing.

Miss Rogers was 16 when she scooped £1.9m in the National Lottery in 2003.

Thompson admitted three counts of supplying cocaine and one of possessing the class A drug with intent to supply.

He also admitted illegally possessing a stun gun which he said he bought in Turkey.

Prosecutor Gerard Rogerson said: “When Mr Thompson was interviewed he was forthright and frank with the police.”

Drugs – weighing about 130.5g – were found in cupboards and wardrobes in the house and in a coffee container in the kitchen.

Andrew Ford, mitigating, said: “This is a sad case of a decent person who committed a grave crime.

“He has the support of a very good family.

“They saw his descent into cocaine addiction and stopped tolerating him in their homes.

“He got a cocaine habit that he couldn’t afford and that’s when his lies began.

“He started to live on friends sofas and then with a partner who he hid this from. She had nothing to do with it and their relationship ended on the day of the arrest. It was a complete surprise to her.

“He realises that what he did was utterly stupid and he told me that he wished he had realised before what a brilliant family he had.

“He feels awful about the embarrassment, shame and hurt he has caused his family.”

The court was told that Thompson was studying business and maths and going to the gym at Lancaster Farms prison.

Sentencing Thompson Judge Barbara Forrester said: “This isn’t a sad case – it’s tragic. You were a young man who had everything going for you.

“You got some passes at GCSE and you had a job until you could not get up for work.

“You started dealing to support your own habit.

“You have found out the hard way that it does happen and it happened to you.”

She sentenced him to 22 months for supplying and possessing cocaine and a further two months for possessing the stun gun.

Thompson, who had no previous convictions, has already served 49 days on remand.

That is such bs her saying she wishes she never won. I'm pretty sure she experienced many things she never would have gotten a chance to if she didnt win.
She is still really young. Its not like her life is over.

asian_XL 09-01-2009 05:47 PM

from another article...

she bought houses for her parents, her sibling, her grandparents, and herself.
If she is still in possession of those houses, I don't think that's bad.

In fact, $20K pound is still a lot for a 22

GLOW 09-01-2009 06:00 PM

She is still really young. Its not like her life is over.

If she spent the money on things that are actually memorable like once in a lifetime trips, then sure.

But if all she did was become accustomed to buying consumer goods and drugs (which is exactly what it sounds like), that she'll not be able to buy anymore, then she'd probably be bitter and would indeed be better off never having it.

Especially if all of the good times she had were with people that no longer give 2 shits about her because she's no longer a cash cow.

Reminiscing about parties that you can no longer have with people that no longer care doesn't sound like much fun

Gt-R R34 09-01-2009 06:50 PM

it begs to wonder, why the first person you don't see when you win the lottery is a

FINANCIAL ADVISOR.

skyxx 09-01-2009 07:07 PM

Cause financial advisors don't play the lottery.
