little birdie told me that vw canada is still trying to make a case to make it feasible to bring it here, but the MSRP is still an issue (poor exchange rate, etc.) |

Interior is great, very comfortable for long rides (Whistler twice, Pitt Meadows once, Abbotsford twice). The seats hug you wonderfully, and the leather is much better than the typical Japanese leather I'm used to. Stock radio is awesome, sounds amazing. Quiet when at cruising speeds, and always feels stable on the highway - but not sluggish. 200hp is a lot of power in a small car like this, and the gobs of torque means that it's faster than you realize around town - I get on the gas, and I zoom past 60km/h faster than I realize, haha. There's no need to boot this car around, very responsive. I don't know what it'll be like when chipped... definitely something to look forward to. Handling is great, not a lot of body roll and always planted and sure, even on bumpy roads. Love the steering, it's deliberate but not slow, with lots of feedback. On the autocross track the car had pretty high limits, and the XDS really helps with eliminating understeer during tight corners. You can get oversteer with this car, something I found out on the way to the Autowerkes open day. ;) Wet road + fast U-turn ftw. :haha: Fuel efficiency isn't bad considering I'm pretty lead-footed. About 500-550km per tank, 55L of 91 octane. Could use some more space, but that would mean that the car needs to get bigger which I don't really want to happen. Touchscreen interface needs to speed up a bit, and more logical controls for navigating folder structures. Also, the hatchback aerodynamics means that the rear gets dirty so fast it's not even funny. Some pics of the wheels mounted: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4053/...c409e150_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/...d3a6b5d2_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/...dbcf0410_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/...c4569bba_b.jpg |
Today I swapped cars with a friend who has a stock MkVI, because he wanted to check out the APR Stage 1 on my car. He has 18" Huffs, I have 18" TD Pro Race 1.2's which are much lighter (approx 9lbs per wheel). Let me tell you, the APR tune makes it very hard for me to keep up with him (in my car!), even when flooring the stock car. Bus lengths! Apparently he said he wasn't even really trying to lose me... I nearly had an oopsie as I was braking behind him; the heavier Huffs make for longer, slower braking response, and I had to stand on the pedal at lot more than I was expecting. Not a good thing, almost slamming into your own car with another guy's car with you behind the wheel. Plus, the steering wheel felt mushier and less connected. On the other side, the ride was a little better and the car was a little quieter. (Might have been the newer tires... my Dunlops were used by another friend for 5-6k miles before he sold them to me cheap) Considering I'm running the stock Dunlop A/S tires, and he was too, I have to conclude that lighter wheels were the determining factor in the braking difference, all things being equal between the two cars - ceteris paribus, so to speak. It's a flop between feeling terrible to see your car pulling away effortlessly from you with an extra guy on board (and you being unable to keep up), and feeling good that your car can indeed do such a thing. |
car looks awesome roastpuff!!! will definitely need to consult you when (if) i get the mkvi! |

having finally been in an mk6, i have to say all that changes are worth it in comparsion to my old mk5... it's quieter, more solid feeling (if that is possible), and the interior styling is a step up, but the choice of materials is a small step down IMO. as much as i like it... i'm not going to be trading up anytime soon (too poor) roastpuff: getting rid of my stock dunlops was one of the best things i did with the car... stock sucks. |
