Here i'll do it for you.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. Former President Jimmy Carter won the award in 2002, while former Vice President Al Gore shared the 2007 prize with the U.N. panel on climate change.

The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize.

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, he said the peace prize should be given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Sweden and Norway were united under the same crown at the time of Nobel's death.

The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change.

The Nobel committee said Obama has created a new climate in international politics that has focused on multilateral diplomacy and an emphasis on the role of the United Nations and other international institutions.

"Thanks to Obama's initiative, the U.S.A. is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened," the citation said.

A record 205 nominations were received for the prize this year.

Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba, Chinese dissident Hu Jia, French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and Afghan women's rights activist Simi Samar were considered key contenders for the prize.

ANALYSIS

The award is certainly unexpected and might be regarded as more of an encouragement for intentions than a reward for achievements.

After all, the president has been in office for a little over eight months and he might hope to serve eight years. His ambition for a world free of nuclear weapons is one that is easier to declare than to achieve and a climate control agreement has yet to be reached.

Indeed, the citation indicates that it is President Obama's world view that attracted the Nobel committee - that diplomacy should be founded "on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population".

I like Obama, but I don't think he deserved the prize based on what's done in the past year (statements, ambitions, etc. notwithstanding)

In terms of the other nominees, I would have given a hard look at Morgan Tsvangirai. If anyone actually has been following what's been going on in Zimbabwe, I would think that Tsvangirai would be more deserving of this prize. He's a guy who's actually fought for what's right in his country, has had his wife killed 'mysteriously', and has been physically intimidated.

I like Obama and all but I don't think he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize yet. He has great intentions but what has actually accomplished so far while in office?

Maybe they're awarding his intentions.

Not to mention that the cutoff for nominations was only two weeks into his term(Feb 01 2009),so he got the Nobel Peace Prize for two weeks of work.

Yup, that's exactly my feeling on this as well. :)

Also sets a bad precedent (getting the Nobel Peace Price for something you haven't done [yet])!

StylinRed 10-09-2009 03:38 PM

i was like "WTF?" when i heard.... im sure there are people who actually deserve the award out there...

it makes no sense at all to give Obama the award... sure he's cool but he hasn't done shit

tbh this really hurts the image of the Noble award for me...

I was under the impresssion that winning a nobel prize is more about life's work and discovering/implementing things.

I don't really know what Obama has done but its weird that he could win something like this for only being in office for such a short period. Its also weird because as a president, it is your job to help peace and prosperity.....I know that its other people's job to invent things too and they win the prize, but the president can really do anything he wants, others affect social change and such...I don't know, I am just rambling..but does anyone know what I mean?

johny 10-09-2009 08:44 PM

they said on the radio today that all nominations for the Nobel peace prize were due 11 days after the election date. meaning his Nobel peace prize nomination had to be in after only 10 days of being president, at which point he had done nothing... (and still hasn't)

goo3 10-09-2009 11:06 PM

^ Nice fact, but I don't see how that's relevant. He obviously won the award for what he did in 8 months, not 11 days.

It just shows you how much of a fuck up Bush was.

If Obama achieves something significant, then the scholars on the Nobel committee were right. If he doesn't, they were wrong.

Which is what?Just because he didn't invade another country, like the previous president, doesn't mean he's earned a Nobel Peace Prize.

!LittleDragon 10-09-2009 11:13 PM

This isn't the first WTF tho... like why did Yasir Arafat win the award and not Gandhi?
