Another high-end brand that a lot of people rave about is Miele... they're more expensive than Dysons.

Why the LOL? Some people live different lives than others.
What you are suggesting is that you would laugh at people who only fly in business or first class.

Because with business class, you get something in return for your money. By buying an expensive vacuum, you get... an expensive vacuum.

I can't believe you would even think of that argument...

You get what you pay for. Generally the higher priced items will have better components: Motors, gears, drives, housings etc...

It's like power tools, you could pay $150 for a Makita angle grinder, or you could pay $30 for a "Powertech" jobbie from walmart...

Guess which one's gear drive is going to melt after cutting only 2 pieces of 1" box tube?

He made a venturi tube. It's not exactly a scientific breakthrough...

Generally, yes. But in the case of vacuum cleaners? I doubt it. I'm not comparing a $50 vacuum bought at a liquidation store to a $200 cleaner bought at Sears. I am more thinking of the idiots who spend like $1500 just because they think they are getting "the best".

And all I am doing is LOLing at them. People get so offended by such trivial things. I just think it's funny is all.

I agree that if the price of an item is disproportionately high compared to the rest of the market because the "name brand" factor, people that buy that item usually have more money than brains.

It's the difference between a vacuum you have to replace every few years, and something that your grandchildren will still be using.

Are you kidding me??? I have dust allergies; this is why I bought a better than average vacuum machine. I also have air purifiers running 24/7.

might be a good idea for a higher CFM/dB fan if it can accelerate the airflow by 16x

As far as "bagless" vacuums go, Dyson is the one to get. It's hard to compare vacuums. They all do what they are supposed to do to various degrees. Features and longevity, as well as ergonomics play an important part in deciding which one to get. Then there's filtration. Allergy sufferers, which I am, need to pay attention to filtration systems - HEPA (true HEPA)

I have a Miele vacuum at home that has lasted 16+ years. The hose is acting up and it will cost quite a bit to get it replaced. Everything else works fine. A new Miele is not an option anymore, because the quality of their products has dropped over the years. I was looking around for a replacement and liked the idea of the Dyson. It's so cool and you can see the dust/dirt/debris collect in the canister. Wife says no. Whenever we look for stuff to buy, my wife researches stuff like mad. It takes months before she decides on something - very thorough. No complaints from me, as she is usually right about these things. She says the Dyson is not good at all compared to other makes and models.

One product that really got our attention was a Sebo. Awesome machines and very well built. German, to be exact. A little pricey, but well worth the money. 5 star hotels and large institutions use them. Anyway, our house is all hardwood floors, so any vacuum would do. It all came down to ergonomics and pricing. Guess what we got? Two uber tiny Samsungs. One with HEPA and one with normal filtration. We are going to get the Meile fixed for upholstery and whatnot.

I was looking forward to the Sebo, because it came with a buffer attachment for hardwood floors. It really looks like it will last a long, long, time.

Vacuums are like cars. Some people are so loyal to certain brands. My Aunt swears by Electolux. I have no idea why.

Anyway, this thread is now about vacuum cleaners, LOL.

One more thing, the Dyson is probably popular with the guys. It has the cool factor.

I love the local discussion on vacuums.

I currently have a dinky Dirt Devil (yeah, it's a bagless canister vacuum) - it's not bad, but probably doesn't have the greatest sucking power. If there's nothing technically wrong with it, I find it hard to justify buying a new one - especially if I'd be plunking down several hundred $$ on a Dyson.

Not really. To me, the only improvement one could make to a floor-standing fan would be to make it silent. Dyson not only completely failed at that, but actually managed to make it noisier. Yeah it looks all whacky and everything, but it's not significantly better in any way. I am not convinced that fans are annoying because they "chop the wind". Whatever

So what he has done is find another way to market something really expensive to people with more money than brains. For that, he gets my props
