Hey, at least he has a job. Though I'm surprised captains in that airline only make $70k. Look at Cathay Pacific, Singapore Air..

Even here, several friends I know have had to take pay cuts (though nowhere near as drastic; more like 10%) to stay employed. Gotta do what you gotta do to survive.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but that's a pretty harsh statement. Not a very fair one at that. People out there are hurting and you make light of the situation. Some people have no choice. I think it takes more balls to take a pay cut in order to keep working and support a family during tough times. The situation here is not nearly as bad as in the US. Anyway, just my 2 bits.

BTW, take a pay cut............. not take a pay cuts.

I'm fortunate to not have had to take a pay cut. I know tons of people that got a pay cut or were laid off. Tough times. Be happy if you're employed

The demotion, the loss of command, the cut in pay...have diminished Mr. Lawlor, 34, in his own eyes...adding that his wife does not want to be married to a pilot with so little earning power.

Seriously? Talk about your penis being tied up in your wallet.

No. I once had my pay cut by 40% but stayed on F/T as it was still enough to live on. When the firm recovered my pay was restored.

Unfortunately, that is the reality for a lot of people. Especially when you have 4 kids to feed and a wife that makes more money than you. Not saying that that is a bad thing or something that is wrong, I'm just saying, in the traditional sense of a family, the man is the bringing food to the table.

I would seriously feel demoralized with my pay was cut in half. Then again, I would expect my wife to stand by my side and fight through it with me. The article seems to go back and forth on this matter. It contradicts itself a few times and alludes to things that are contrary to what it said before.

In terms of % I think I took a big hit. About 70% of my wage last year was not given to me this year. Thank God for base plus commission. If it wasn't for base I think I'd be making worse than minimum wage.

Solution. Bang the wife 50% more often and 50% harder and then say, "There. I'm still 100% what I used to be."

Math correction.......... bang 100% more.

I just think the editor or reporter got it wrong.

Love is being tied to money, as it has always been. A lot of marriages nowadays are more like business relationships. When everything goes well, then it's all good. When things go bad for one party, the other party will go find a new business partner. It's sad but true.

How big of a pair do you need to have to put your family's life on the line with the rash decisions you make. The guys 10yr old and younger children can't earn for themselves so if he tries to leave for another job that would pay him more and doesn't get it, the family starves.

That's balls for taking the humiliation and staying with the job to support his family IMHO.

Is it really that bad in the US? Seems like a lot of people are hurting....we're lucky to live in Canada where it's not as bad. I'd take a reasonable pay cut to stay employed though.

You'd figure that would be the logical thing to do, but taking a pay cut to save jobs is not an option for some unions. Sad, isn't it?

So much for brotherhood and sisterhood.

Anyway getting off topic, again.

Those CEO's of mega corporations should forfeit their multi-million dollar salaries/bonuses and do what the CEO of Japan Airlines did.

Right on. In Japan, the CEO's take their jobs very seriously. When they fail, they fail all the people under them and vice versa. They feel responsible for the welfare of the workers. It's understandable, because in that culture, your job is your life.

In our society, a job is a job and nothing more. I like what we have here (to an extent).

I'm sorry to see that his pay was cut...but their combined income is over $70,000 US...and that is not exactly starvation wages...specially in the US with way lower taxes and th e baility to cliam stuff like your mortgage interest payments etc. The way he is talking I would not feel safe flying with him...specially as a Captain. How about finding a second job for all the down time that he has? That should help his wife's ego.

I think his story was just one example of what is happening to middle and upper middle class people in the US. It's about how his pride is hurt - a fall from grace. I don't think he was whining. The people who wrote the article are sensationalizing. I highly doubt what his wife said was word for word. It could even be what he thinks his wife is feeling or thinking. People in his shoes and others close to his situation will read this article and identify with this person. If the current economic situation continues and things don't get any better, I'm sure he will find another job. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

It is a sad story, nonetheless.
