I don't work for VANOC, but after seeing the real press photos, that photo posted looks like it's been altered in order to elicit catcalls of ugliness. The medals are circular, but they are also wavy. They actually look pretty decent and at over a pound each, I'm sure the athletes will appreciate them. The real photos are here: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/news-centr...tml?cid=rsstsn
Weight and uniqueness matter when it comes to medals.

In other Olympic-related news... Quote: Amritdhari Sikhs allowed to wear kirpans to 2010 Olympic venues
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The RCMP say Amritdhari Sikhs will be allowed to wear kirpans into 2010 Winter Games venues. The 2010 Integrated Security Unit says it's developed guidelines in consultation with the Sikh community. RCMP say with few examples of the kirpan being used as a weapon, they don't expect any additional risk.
Those wearing a kirpan will have to inform venue security. The total length of the ceremonial sword won't be able to exceed seven and a half inches. As well, it will have to be worn under clothing and not be easily accessible.

I just saw them on the evening news. Awesome design. Each medal is unique. No two athletes will have the same shape medal. It's all cut from a wavy stock.
Again, people jumping to conclusions. That pic up top there does not do the medals justice. I guess the photo was trying to capture the waviness of the medals.

The medals are apparently half a kg in weight. And they look nicer than the picture shows.
Also, did anybody hear about the crazy lockdown? No parking at all for 650 blocks, and most of downtown being pedestrian only.

We have about 4 months to go before the big show and it's amazing how many 'whiners' are still out there. I routinely check the comment boards on any news items related to the Olympics and people are still complaining about the Olympics. It's getting tired.
I have always been pretty ambivalent about the bid, although I did feel a sense of pride when we won the games back in 2003. I've met people who've been working on the games and I must admit that they're somewhat consumed with their own hype about the Olympics. Sure, there have been some serious cost overruns. But, instead of cursing the games and complaining, you would think that people would start throwing their support behind the games so that we can at least recover some of the costs. Obviously some people have made money as a result of the games - construction companies, realtors, etc. Even if the Olympics were just a cash grab, where were you when the frenzy happened? We got some much needed infrastruture such as the Canada Line and we're going to have a couple of neat facilities afterwards such as the Olympic Oval.
We'll probably have a hangover after the games, but I don't think it'll be as bad as what happened to Montreal after their games. And if the city is going to be really so bad, I'll gladly open the door and show you the way out.

I think those medal actually look pretty good. It is just the angle in the shoit that makes them look bad in the pics. But its way better than just having a traditional medal. Apparently every single medal is going to be unique no two medals alike.
Also all these medals were made from materials that were destined for the landfill so thats another positive.
The medals actually have some real weight to them as well supposed to be about 1.5 lbs

^ well said.
The bottom line are the olympics are coming and these protesters who are against it, the large majority of them are the ones looking for a free handout, the kind that will not ever accept a "hand-up" but just want everything handed to them in a city that the cost of living before and after the olympics is a climate which you must WORK to survive
the same very people whom are complaining that "they" are paying for the games are the same ones lining up for a welfare check
the games are coming and the best thing educated and reasonable citizens of Vancouver/Canada can do is to fully support them and make the games a complete success, which will be the best outcome for everyone.
People complained about expo86 too, and alot of the same arguments, too expensive, too many people, bla bla bla, expo put Vancouver on the map and did only great things for our city
People should be proud that our city is being showcased on a worldwide level and every resident regardless of race, religion, etc should welcome all the visitors and have the forigeners going back home talking of how great the city and the people are in Vancouver and how it was nothing but a great experiance

Ok, after seeing the later pics of the medals, they're not bad. I do appreciate the fact that each medal will be unique.

| There is a small, but I suppose significant minority in Vancouver who are anti-development, anti-expansion. They complain about infrastructure projects, they complain about immigration, they complain about events like the Olympics and Expo, they complain about certain companies doing business in Vancouver, etc. In fact, I've sometimes sometimes seen these views expressed on this board. If my family had lived in Kits/Kerrisdale/Shaughnessy for several generations, I would be somewhat relunctant to open 'my city' (as opposed to anyone else's) to change as well. I do also agree that Vancouver is 'paradise.' But, the basic fact is that in order for cities to survive, they must be open to change and growth.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A reward for a job well done or a waste of money? VANOC will pay out millions in bonuses to its workers after the Olympics are over.
The organizing committee has set aside $30 million for the bonuses and if every one of VANOC's 1,300 employees are given an equal share, that would work out to $23,000 per person.
In a statement, VANOC's Dave Cobb says the money is meant to make sure workers stay on until the Olympics end. He points to previous organizing committees dealing with losing a dozen people a month in the last year before the event.
Critics aren't so sure and say $30 million is a steep figure considering the economy and cuts to other programs.
