One of the other things that bothers me a bit is the fact former athletes who won medals for our country are not given the opportunity to attend the games. I don't think they can even buy tickets if they wanted to.
Perhaps one of the corporations that have access to tickets might donate a few to these legends who, in the past, did our country proud by bringing back medals.

I believe Olympic is just a playground for the mega rich. They have fun while milking tax money from the government. Small frys like us suffer but no 1 really cares. Rich gets richer & we suffer. This is how is gonna be and it's how it's gonna stay.

As far as I'm concerned, if companies put up big money, then they should be given a share of tickets proportionate to their contribution. And as you suggest, if they're smart, they will give tickets to selected former athletes in order to boost their brands. Former athletes can buy tickets, but as general members of the public (subject to lottery, etc.)

Sure, most of us don't have money to buy condos in the Olympic Village (and considering the shody build quality, I wouldn't want to even if I had the money - trust me, I know as I live in a building with the same developer and contractor.) I can understand a statement like this if you're mentally ill, or below the poverty line and are struggling to make ends meet. But, let's face it - most of us on here are middle class and that likely won't change after the Olympics.
And it's not like we can't use some of the infrastructure we've gotten after the games - Canada Line, upgrade to the 99, Trout Lake centre upgrades, Richmond Olympic Oval, etc. These are public goods that generate social and economic returns.

Upper middle class and higher, definitely, but not the middle class and lower. The middle class have less and less disposable income these days. Also, the Canada Line was going to happen one way or another.
Anyway, the hype is here, everybody will get caught up in it, and nobody is going to give a rats ass until it is all over. So I guess it's party on!
Go, Canada, GO!

Thank god for the corporations. Without them, a lot of the things we take for granted would not be possible. Then again, without the consumer, they wouldn't be around.
Corporations live for events like the Olympics. They come across as heroes to a lot of people, but we have to remember they get so much out of these events.
The next few months are going to be a winfall for the politicians, as well. Time to compose those wonderful, inspiring speeches, and like the saps we are, we'll fall for it, forgetting about all the other terrible things that are going on.
Famous words by Bobby McFerrin:
don't worry........... be happy.

Once the events r over, they take off & leave us with the bills. Yea, we dun notice it now but we will have to pay for everything in the long run. Tax hike leave most of us with less disposable income. With less money to spend the economy slows. It can come back & bite us in the end.
However, this is the case with locals. Vancouver has been relying on foreign for so long that i'm sure the Olympic spendings are positive in the overall pictures. Some wins and some loses. Sadly, I think locals like us r the ones who lose.

I think the only businesses to benefit are the hospitality and resteraunt/bar industries. I'm probably working 16 hour days 7 days a week.

Go, Canada, GO! | agreed, although glad that trout lake icerink and facilities like that got replaced.
pitt river and golden ears not too bad either,& although not connected to the olympics per say the hwy1 and south fraser perimeter road are next.
along with the new port mann, cape horn interchange, and widened hwy1 these overpasses/on/off ramps will also be replaced
Gilmore;
Willingdon;
Douglas (new on/off ramp for commercial vehicles only);
Sprott;
Kensington;
Gaglardi;
Brunette;
cape horn interchange (looks huge but actually super compact compared to similar stuff in the us) |

In the last month, I've already signed 4 new contracts and am in the process of locking down 2 more now.
The only con for me is that I spend all my time downtown pretty much so traffic and getting around will be chaos and filming on the TV production I work on will be interrupted because the city isn't granting permits during the Olympics, but other than that it'll be a good thing for me, plus I'm looking forward to all the parties |
