These people have common sense and should be able to use them without causing troubles... whereas most of the public will cause troubles, so the easiest way is to ban everyone

how bout cordless blenders are they ok?

This thread is full of stupid questions.

This law is being implemented for obvious safety issues but people are so self absorbed that they seem to over look that fact and just complain about how inconvenient it is.

Blenders aren't a safety hazard unless you forget to put the lid on, and wind up with margarita splattered all over the windshield...

The majority of police cars I see here have only the driver in them.

Part of the advanced driver training courses involves exactly that. The driver finds out in seconds that concentration given to even spelling his own name over the radio, makes your driving turn to crappy in an instant. Sometimes it HAS to be done, like calling the initial stages of a pursuit so that other cars can locate you, but soon as another vehicle arrives, the second vehicle does the calling and the primary unit does the driving. That is why Police are against even hands-free phones. The divided attention problem is a medical certainty. You only have 100% concentration. That which you give to the device HAS to be subtracted from your comprehension and driving.

And how do officers who are by themselves cope with using the radio or cell phone?

Does that really matter?
It all comes down to numbers. A few cops talking on phones is far less risky then a million motorists talking on there phones. Not to mention the majority (or one would hope) is communicating for the purposes of saving lives. Should that be taken away because of some pissy cell phone talking drivers?

Should a select few motorists be permitted to drink and drive? A dangerous activity is a dangerous activity.

I don't care that emergency responders can use such devices, I was simply curious as to what techniques they employ to ensure that it is done safely.

While I don't disagree that humans are pretty much packages on a giant UPS conveyer belt, this las has nothing to do with the Olympics. BC is not the only province to have recently introduced this law.

Maybe your car will be stolen and will drive by a police car, but the officer doesn't know it is stolen because he cannot take the call

Wow, this is ultimate fail.

Hey sh*t-for-brains... you don't have to stay home, and you don't have to pay a cent... just use a freakin' handsfree with your phone when you're driving. It doesn't have to be Bluetooth - all phones come with a wired headset that will do the job just fine.

Wow.

Just...

WOW.

Edit: on second thought, maybe you should just stay in your room... you're obviously too stupid to be operating a motor vehicle. Worse than that, you're WAY too self-centered.

I'm sure the citizens of Newfoundland, where there is a total ban...no hands-free at all...will be unhappy to hear that they are funding the "BC Olympics" Same for Ontario where they do permit hands-free phone usage.

Even reading RS you will find many complaints about dangerous idiot cell phone users. IF WE can be scared by them, imagine how the non-RS public feels ? Anyone here NOT been forced to avoid a dangerous cell phone user? Didn't think so.

Is it permitted for new cars to be equipped with bluetooth systems there or do manufacturers have to have special NFLD versions of their cars without such devices?

While I fully support the ban on using a phone while driving, I don't understand the reasoning behind banning the use of one while sitting stationary in traffic waiting for lights.

^ Because I've seen friends do that, and a lot of time they miss the light change. Even in the second it takes me to tell them of the change, that's slowing everyone down.

Also, aren't you guys forgetting something, the cops also get to use lights and sirens. So when they're making that quick call in while dashing off somewhere, people are gtfo of the way and (in theory) shouldn't suddenly dash in the way or some such activity that can cause problems when regular road users are on the phone.
