Disabling a cell-phone at highway speed...

Remember when CREST was having all those problems and officers needed to use their cell-phones instead of their radios?

Banning passengers in cars from using a phone? Banning passengers in a bus from using a phone? Businessmen conducting business via the phone from the back of a taxi?

I know we are quickly becoming more and more of a police-state society, but please Zulutango, don't tell me you believe in those sorts of limitations on rights and freedoms.

Never said I was not in favour of passengers using phones. Simply said that the phone technology exists right now to do so and that it was not being used. The examples you listed would be prime examples of "exemptions".

^Now all you need to do, is add a "smart" circuit that targets the jamming beam only at the driver of a vehicle.

I know you aren't allowed to browse txt msgs because you'll be looking down on your phone. If your speaker phone is a one touch answer, then I think you'll be ok as long as you're not holding it.

This popped up in my head last night... what if the passenger picks up the call for the driver, then holds it up to the drivers ear?

It is still considered "hands free" because the driver still has both hands to do his/her driving.

The ban was that it had to be one touch unless you pull over, but you're not even pressing a button, the passenger is.

is a telephone like driver's kryptonite?

so what if im driving a stick, and talking to my friend beside me? is that the same as driving an automatic and holding a phone? i
I think the insurance company should change how they test the people. heres a solution:

drive a standard, while eating hot soup. if you can do that, you are good to go.

Maybe you should re-read the new law. Or the police will ensure you are no longer driving...

In the last 24 hours..a woman on her cell phone driving a Jeep Cherokee, ran a stop sign and almost hit me while I was on a crosswalk...a driver with his wife & kids in a Toyota, went from the curb lane, across the straight thru lane and into a left turn lane ( running a red no left turn light), cut me off and made a left in front of me in oncoming traffic. We have a way to go yet.

Use the speaker phone?

I wonder why there hasn't been a big market in "cell phone hats" that hold your phone for you like those beer can hats do

I'm glad I am considered as stupid as these guys when it comes to making a quick 30 second call at a red light

from a legal standpoint, you have to be grouped with them.

NOT as STUPID...but as distracted and illegal. Given my choice..it would be, in decreasing order... 1) NO phones at all, 2) handsfree while stopped, 3) handsfree while driving. When I become king, I shall order it so!

i think this is acceptable, for people who cant multitask

i believe many people are very skilled and shouldnt suffer, but I will admit, ridiculous laws are usually created because of the mass failure of the population. dang.......

why cant they just give some people a special class 5-x or something license, that allows you to drive stick, talk on the phone, ect.... I know its never going to happen, but DANG q=

EDIT: oh wow, i just read u almost got run over........ LOL holy F*

yeah, i guess it might be for the better

yeah but think about all the people with just regular licenses that can't drive for crap to begin with. plus you'd still have to get pulled over to check for a special license.

Banning cell phones while in motion would be a bad idea.

Imagine if someone was after you and you couldn't call 911..

I think if you got pulled over for calling 911 because someone was after you, you would have acheived your goal of getting a police officer.

Wingwoo, you do have a point.

I'm just thinking of a news story I saw maybe 10 years ago about a girl in LA who was fatally stabbed in her car because someone was pursuing her and she couldn't dial 911. In that case it was caused by cell towers actually blocking the airwaves of competitors so she had a constant dead signal over several miles. Obviously this is not the case (I hope) in BC but just trying to point out the dangers here. Sure it doesn't happen too often, but just because it hasn't happened to you..

Also, don't forget that if talking in motion is disabled, now even your passengers can't call anyone while your car is moving. Anyone ever try to call your friends while searching for a restaurant?

While I'm all for reducing distractions for driving and think this BT rule is great, I think the law needs to put more onus on the caller as opposed to simply criminalizing a significant chunk of the population. I mean, we might as well ban chain saws, floor jacks, exact-o knives, forks, and staplers as well?

^ I think that may be the case here in Ontario, my old phone can't dial ANYTHING at all, but back in BC it can at least call customer service. I haven't tried 911 tho (haven't needed to)

I wish to differ with your opinion. This morning I watched a woman pull out of a parking lot in front of me, cutting me off and forcing me to slow down. She then drove below the limit, missed seeing 2 people about to cross the crosswalk in front of her because she was looking down at her purse, then wandered from her lane to the next one and back again, with no signals. Guess what she was doing...right...on her hand held cell phone. When I honked at her to get her to try to see the pedestrians about to cross the X walk, she fingered me & continued talking.
