one year since the recession well its technically a few years since the recession hit and the markets dropped from dows high of 14k, but the main effect of the recession was around last sept/oct. how has it affected you in the last year? lost your job? lost money? maybe gained money? still unemployed? discuss. |
crap! wrong forum. here come the fails. mods move this please. |
Job remained pretty much the same, got a raise, making more right now than I did a year ago. Investments took a dive downwards, but made it back to the positives right now. Overall, the "recession" didn't really affect me that much. |
my mutual funds were down for a while! but now they're back to what they were at 2 years ago. i still consider it a loss since i should be getting at least 5% a year from those, so im down around 10%. my stock portfolio was up and down like crazy and i only ended up making a little (25% is considered a little... lots of people doubled up) still got my job! not sure if thats a good thing. |
i'm working for one of the health service authorities and there are people getting laid off left and right all around me. i'm on notice as well... but i won't know until next april :o i have a modest investment portfolio that i've been trying to contribute to, but it's been hard not see any returns on pretty much anything :( |
u guys r lucky. I have been searching for a job and it is tough. I'm a newbie and most jobs require some related experience. I am trying to invest my money but dunno where to start. |
thank God the only setback i experienced was i had to cut my hours for work from 40-30 back in august for month. other than that life has gone relatively ok. fyi im also a student. |
At worst we would still haz rs. |
Last September I was in school. Now I'm working! Yay! My job is to repair electronics, if anything I should thank the recession. Customers not sending their shit in for repair. Which means I can go on RS at work! haha =) |
Ya but rs aint gonna put meals on the dinner table now would It I guess I should be thankful., still got my jobs Quote:

What I experienced through the year was there was a pay freeze with our salary. With car sales down compared to previous years, our office does fewer car insurnace for the dealerships, which means lesser income for the office, and hence a pay freeze. However, my commission has been going up slightly. |
investments took a big hit |

i really need to put more money away. one of the long-term employees where i work should have retired 3 years ago but he can't because he dosen't have enough to retire on... i don't want to end up like him :o |
Still have my job thankfully. Haven't been able to ask for a pay increase with the company making A LOT less money though then it was last year. Hopefully I still get my end of year bonus :) |
lost my job |
only thing the recession has done thus far is prevent our union from getting our annual raise and job stability is uncertain at this point. other than that, not much at all. oh, and a new position was axed. |
Rofl.... making even more money than before. |
^and bought a new car? |
got a raise but my hours were cut short and i've been trying to look for a new job but it's so hard to find one |

Job market is still unstable....service sector --> there's demand. Office job --> not good Currency, yes, CDN is strong, but it hurts our economy seriously. More gov't tax = we are poorer. Security markets are strong, but average investors are not making much at all. Only those fund houses and brokers are making big bucks are we better off? not really...Rich people become richers, poor people become even poorer |
Still unemployed and finding a job. Hoping to get a job at the dealership I'm at for work experience right now. |
I survived layoffs of 33 people because I was employed 6 months before the cut off date. they eliminated overtime pay, switched from 12 hour fix shifts 3 and 4 days a week to rotating 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. this means every 2 weeks we go from a 6am-2pm shift, to a 2pm-10pm shift, to a 10pm-6am shift with no weekends. this maked it nearly impossible to work a second job or go to school part time. Everyone was having a tough time because it takes almost to the end of your 2nd week before you adjust your sleeping patterns before you are onto the next shift rotation. enough people complained and so they took a vote and it was decided that every two weeks we would rotate between just 2 shifts. thankfully i received the 2 shifts that worked best for me, while there are a lot that didn't receive their first choice. while it works out that I am actually working a slightly longer week, I am making slightly less because I miss out on the steady shift premium for working the graveyard shift which i now receive just every 2 weeks. a lot of this has to do with the recession, the rest has to do with a major plant upgrade in Winnipeg that makes shipping work here to Kamloops less efficient. We have all been stressed out because we all believe this plant is shutting down for good, its just a matter of when. |
