Steering wheel setups

How do you guys with the steering wheels (logitech, xbox, etc) have it hooked up to your game consoles?

My coffee tables too low, I tried a portable dinner table which is not sturdy at all.

I've found a couple stands from Fanatec, Wheel Stand Pro, Xcelerator, etc. All costs over $200 USD with shipping.

Anyone have any DIY ideas they've done, or interested in a group buy? Would likely need to order about 20 to do group buy. I can setup a vendor account with one of the companies.

I know what you mean OP, I was used to my friends fully built racing seat and frame.... but a good very effective and simple setup is a table similar to the one I got right here in the pictures below...If I remember correctly I bought it at Wal Mart (Not 100% sure though) you can find computer tables similar to this at any office store and they can be pretty much any height thanks to adjustable height office chairs, but the most important thing is on the bottom it has to be free so you can put your pedals on the carpet, so the table can't have any pieces on the bottom, has to have space for the pedals...

it's really sturdy, I can get pretty violent with the wheel when I'm drifting for example, and it doesn't budge much, also it has room just barely to fit a 21 inch widescreen like the one I got in the pics there.....
And coming from race seat framed setups custom built to this, I've never really had a problem or had an urge to go back to the seat/frame setups so it's your next best solution and it works pretty well.... I'm 6'1 and 190 lbs and I can play like this for a few hours without any comfort issues.... I have a $300 ergonomic office chair though, so you need a comfy seat offcourse, but as far as positioning of the steering wheel and petals, it's perfect

here's a quick picture

ZOMG, i have the same table. I got it from IKEA

Cman333 10-27-2009 02:24 PM

I have a desk that works great for PC (similar to yours but bigger ADON), but for console gaming I don't want to have a big desk sitting there for gaming. I would rather utilize my TV for gaming rather than my LCD monitor. Looking for ideas or tips on a stand for the living room. I don't have space in my apartment for a playseat or anything big.

Looks like only option is to get the Fanatec stand.

Anyways I'll call them and see how much my retailer discount would be.

when i upgraded to the g25 my dad helped put together this racing stand for me

I attempted to spray paint racing stripes using the tape method last month. Took me 2 cans just to get it evenly sprayed on.. This stand was meant to be used with the couch for viewing distance/audio sweetspot but it's a bitch moving it in/out

hooks to keep pedals stationary
the wires looks messy but it's actually quite tidy. I have the USB cord tucked into the floorboards so it seems almost like it's wireless

it took 2-3 revisions to get it to that state...probably another one to elevate the pedals and valcro for wire management in the near future and it'll be perfected

jtanner_ 10-27-2009 10:46 PM

^That's a sick setup...

Cman333 10-28-2009 02:11 AM

I think i'll have to pony up soon and buy the Fanatec stand + steering wheel.

I need something that can fold up and be stored away. I live in an apartment and space is always the issue.

Anyone own the Fanatec Turbo S wheel?

Hondaracer 10-28-2009 01:25 PM

depending on what you get for the group buy i might be down..

although im leaning more towards building my own out of wood since i already have a racing seat, and i like building things :)

threezero 12-27-2009 04:52 PM

sorry to bump the old thread but i just got myself the gt5p + dualshock3 combo yesterday and i'm totally in love with this game i don't see how ppl think forza is better. I want to get myself a nice wheel/seat setup before the full games comes out does anybody know where i can buy playseat evo locally?

impactX 12-27-2009 04:59 PM

Forza is not "better" but at least it didn't take them hundreds of decades to release the damn game.

sonick 12-28-2009 08:38 AM

Now THIS is a crazy steering wheel setup: http://jalopnik.com/393849/homemade-...an-modern-bmws

With real functional speedo and tach, HVAC blowers, stereo and ignition

threezero 12-28-2009 12:28 PM

so there is no local store that carry gaming chair and stands? I'm so no god at putting things together when they don't come with instructions =/

european 12-28-2009 01:28 PM

Chilicoke's is the pretty sweet in my opinion. I've see another one after poking around google but I can't find the link again. The guy had the whole interior from a VW. Center console, dash, seat, I even think he installed door panels lol. Never the less it was a pretty sweet setup. Although like many have mentioned one needs a lot of time, patience, skill, money and room for such a racing gaming chair thing.

I use to have one that I made when I changed my cloth interior to leather in my Prelude. I made it out of PVC piping, nuts, bolts, and a little bit of plywood/2x4's. I have some pics somewhere I'll try to post them if I find them for people who are interested in making one. I based it on the Sparco Cockpit GT that was out for some time. Don't know if its still available. After a while someone wanted my cloth Prelude interior so I had to part with the seat and I took the setup apart. I wish I still had it but I'm dealing with not a lot of space.

I'm looking for another racing gaming chair thingy again. Particularly the Playseats Evolution in white/silver with the gearshift accessory. All I can find are the ones on amazon.com and smoketronics.com
But I am trying to find it locally or atleast someone/somewhere in Canada that has it because after I calculated everything I will be spending just under 500CDN for it all (after shipping, duty and taxes) Trying to see if I can get it cheaper somewhere before I pull the trigger on amazon.com

I've been looking for 5 days now... I really want one!! :(

threezero 12-28-2009 01:32 PM

aint smoketronic canadian? wouldn't that mean one would save on shipping? where exactly is playseats made in? usa?

european 12-28-2009 01:38 PM

I'm not sure where they are made... I'm assuming China but if you go to the playseats website.. www.playseat.com they appear to be based out of Europe? And if you click resellers the map that's provided has two locations both in Italy.

Not sure if smoketronics is canadian or not but it looks like they do ship to/within Canada.
But if you look at the item is says out of stock. They'll have more sometime in January 2010. I want mine NOW! hahaha
