You guys still riding or what?? Come on, Bike To Work Week is coming soon! What's a bit of rain...
I'll admit, I haven't had much time to ride lately, but I've been trying to get this latest project together. Most of you probably could care less since it's an old touring bike. 1995 (or so) Trek 520! I previously had a Trek 520 and loved it, but it was just slightly too big and I regrettably sold it. I've been searching for another ever since. Then this frame landed in my lap a couple months ago, and I was surprised to find out it was a 520 and in my size! This is THE frame to have if one plans on any long distance touring. Heavy, yet smooth, and all steel. Pics..

Because I didn't want to spend too much money on it, I threw on whatever parts I had in my stash. New parts include the (cheap) Alex Rims, Schwalbe Marathon tire on front, Nokian tire on rear, 9 Spd cassette, Shimano chain, Shimano Deore LX front brakes, Avid Shorty 6 rear brake, & Dura-Ace 9 Spd downtube shifters! (Yes, I splurged on the shifters). Shimano A520 pedals, Bontrager Affinity Saddle, old Devinci seatpost, Bontrager stem, all new Shimano brake cables, Tektro brake levers, FSA Compact bar and Deda bar tape (yet to be put on). Racks and fenders to come.
So yeah, it's quite the mish-mash of parts but it'll work. I think grand total I've spent on this bike is right around $200.

Trek 520 is one of the most popular vintage touring/canti frames! Definitely a great project and well done on the build.

I've been pretty lucky with both my 520's. The 1st one I got, I paid like $25 for the whole bike! This one came with a couple of other bikes, which I've since sold to break even, so I consider this to be a 'free' frame.
Not sure what your size and price range is, but there's a couple of Miyatas and the odd Surly pops up on CL occasionally.

Dude, how did you score that for $25!? I'm also looking for one for light touring but not sure if I want to go old school lugged or newer-ish. I'm usually on the lookout too.

Just got lucky on that one, someone was moving and clearing out their balcony.
It's tough nowadays, seems like so many people lurking CL, refreshing every 2 minutes to score the deals.

Not much action in this thread lately! Hopefully everyone had a great summer of riding.

I recently joined Escape Velocity and have been riding with them lately.

Great group of competitive chaps. Will probably do some of the crits next season. I might try cross as well.

Speaking of cross, I scored a ridiculous deal on this 2012 focus mares disc.

Will be my winter bike!

Nice ride! Those are some ridiculously tight fitting front fenders haha.

I picked up a trainer to work on my fitness/power over the winter, in addition to riding outside. Should definitely look into some groups for winter training as well.

I would recommend going to EVs Facebook Public site, then check out their website to see the calendar.

Escape Velocity

Make sure you read all the rules as our club is very strict on fender requirements (full fenders with rear mudflap within 5 inches of the group) and group riding ability.

You will also need a Cycling BC license. EV will allow those w/o license up to 2 rides with a signed waiver.

Club rides are on saturdays. Hope to see you out some time

If anybody's interested in a set of Zipp 404 58mm clincher's, let me know. They came with my bike, but too much wheel for me. They are the ones with the aluminum braking surface. Same weight as the current 404 Firecrest full carbon clinchers. Offseason RS special $750

What kind of fenders are those? Looks like they can fit in pretty tight clearances. My langster has problems with fenders even though it has the bosses for them.

SKS Raceblades are good choice.

Or try the Planet Bike Cascadia road bike fenders for 700x23c

If neither of those clear it, then the Crud Roadracer MK2 will fit most low clearance frames

If those don't do it, then you can use the Planet Bike SpeedEZ

My fenders appear to be low clearance b/c of the way i installed it really tight to the tire.

Thanks! I was looking at the SKS raceblades and the crud roadracer mk2. Roadracers are 43 bucks from chain reaction site.

Crud Road Racer Mudguard Set MKII | Chain Reaction Cycles

Some reviews say that the roadracers don't last very long and are a bit fidgity to get it right and are flimsy. How are you finding the raceblades? Any issues? Almost pulled the trigger on the roadracer as there are some people who have fit these on the Langster. Spesh bikes seem to be low clearance on most of their road models which kind of sucks for cold weather riding.

It's getting pretty gross riding to work in the rain now. My ass gets muddy and wet so I think I have to finally bite the bullet and get some fenders.

Fenders ftw for commuting. Another thing to consider is what size tires you're running. This winter I'm sizing down my tires for additional clearance. When its too tight you get the constant rattle of stones and leaves getting stuck in between.
