for the people who do 12 hr study days, do you actually do really good on the exams? im a study a week before exam type, but only like 3 hrs a day, can never do 12 hr straight

taylor192 12-07-2009 10:42 AM

If you need to cram now, don't bother, just take the C/D and move on in life.

The real world doesn't work this way. Employers will expect you to steadily get work done, not procrastinate till a deadline then a mad rush to get it done.

Do yourself a favour and learn this skill now. If you think employers only look at grades you are mistaken. More and more interviews include many questions on how you work, and last minute people are quickly filtered out.

Everyone is different, yet I stick by this rule: if you know the material well enough to teach others, you'll do just fine.

I liked to study ahead of time, then help my friends study. It was a good judge to see if I could teach them the material, then I knew it well enough.

Also use the 80/20 rule. Its far better to spend time studying 80% of the material you know well, than time trying to learn the last 20% which might be too difficult or beyond your comprehension (everyone does have limits).

Bad move.

A good night's sleep is the best thing you can do before an exam. You'll be relaxed and not stressed going in.

Did you know the best exam scores are on morning exams? Why? Cause your mind is most awake after a good sleep.

Did you know the worst exam scores are on afternoon exams? Why? Cause by the afternoon most of us get tired/distracted. Its best to take a nap before afternoon and evening exams.

Look it up if you don't believe me. I spent a lot of time in university researching how to get the best marks without spending stupid amounts of time studying. Studying interfered with keg parties.

JKam 12-07-2009 10:58 AM

i don't really study. I just wait for my friends to ask me questions and I teach them. Easy way to judge my comprehension of the material

woob 12-07-2009 11:12 AM

another use of the 80/20 rule here would be that 20% of your studying time results in 80% of your knowledge. the other 80% you're probably just chatting on msn, learning unnecessary stuff that isnt going to be tested or relevant, so tired that you're not absorbing the info, etc...

No.

If you're tired, take a nap then study.
You shouldn't be tired studying last minute if you've studied all term.
If you're easily distracted while studying, find somewhere less distracting.
Learning to not be distracted is a skill so many lack today.

This is probably one of the biggest tips most students need: get away from the computer
- More and more classes/materials are being offered online, which encourages students to sit on the computer with easy access to a lot of distraction.
- Studies show we retain more knowledge when reading from printed paper than a computer screen.
- Print your material and get away from the computer. You'll learn more without distraction, and retain more.

If it was serious, you failed miserably.

your use of the 80/20 rule isnt really even the 80/20 rule.
you just found ways to say 80% and 20% in the same sentence.

Audi-Quattro 12-07-2009 12:21 PM

You both fail
Study the right 20% of the material and you'll be able to do 80% of the exam

unit 12-07-2009 12:24 PM

80% of the outputs come from 20% of the inputs.
thats exactly what i said.

acyx 12-07-2009 12:28 PM

so true.. should b able to know what will get tested on for sure from the materials in class then you'll b fine

J-Chow 12-07-2009 12:30 PM

lol. studying useless courses FTL.

seriously, why incorprate courses to your degree that have no value or knowledge correlated to that major/program?
Paying $500 for a course, not including textbooks and taxes etc, so you can study your ass off and reiterate what the proff says in lecture, so you can receive a good mark, which lets you proceed onto further courses which also has no 'usefulness' in your future career, which then leads you to a piece of paper that's worth $30,000 or more which doesn't guarantee you a job, and then having to go back to school to repeat the process, because that current piece of paper just wasn't enough in the real world. makes you think don't it...

end rant. *puts on flame suit, flame on!*

Gh0stRider 12-07-2009 12:30 PM

i dont think any employer would give a rats ass about grades unless you're in accounting/finances

most of us are trying to polish our grades because of applications to grade/professional school in the future.

that said, i fucked up royally in 1st and 2nd year (cGPA is around 69%) and I need to up that to at least 80% when i walk across the stage during my convocation.

Now that I'm in my senior years (3rd yr) it's time to get really serious about school =T

I only have 2 exams (this Fri and next Fri) but so many assignments before that.

You'd be surprised how many ask for transcripts. All the companies I have worked for ask for transcripts of new grads.

Not in medicine, science or engineering.

unit 12-07-2009 12:35 PM

i said 20% of your studying results in 80% of your knowledge.
in................................................ ...........................out

not like your 80/20 rule where you just fudged some random meanings that really meant nothing.

I have a mixed degree of systems/computers/software/electrical/communications engineering since I overloaded on courses. Currently work in health care IT.
