Surveillance cameras go live in downtown Vancouver February 1st VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Starting February 1st there will be 100 surveillance cameras recording throughout downtown Vancouver as part of the Olympic security plan. The city says they will be monitored for public safety, crime prevention, property protection, and incidents that need a police or emergency response. Areas under surveillance include Robson and Granville Streets, Yaletown, and both downtown LiveCity sites. Although there will be signs alerting people if they are in a monitored area, the camera’s aren’t sitting well with everyone on the streets of Vancouver. This man doesn’t like the idea. “I feel like it’s a complete invasion of my privacy.” Others aren’t concerned. “Probably if you’re going to commit a crime, you know where the CCTV cameras are. And if you’re not going to commit a crime there’s nothing to worry about.” Footage will be kept anywhere between 30 days and one year. The city says the cameras will be taken down after March 28th but some of the infrastructure will remain in place. http://www.news1130.com/more.jsp?con...07_221328_7228 anyone else got a feeling they won't take the cameras down after the 28th like they say they would |
The cameras won't be going anywhere after the games, the olympics is just a excuse to put them up. They will most likely come up with a excuse like "it cost too much money to take them down" or "they are already in place, why not keep them there". |
pfff.. you peeps havent been to london |

The cameras aren't going to be any help... look at London there's cameras everywhere and crime persists, its abundant even. I get the feeling they won't take them down as well... but i hope they will.. didn't they bring in a new weapon to combat any potential rioters? like some sort of sound device? heard on the radio but i cant recall |
if it's only downtown - by all means I actually support it, i used to work the nightshift in DT Passport Office, and damn it was scary at night waiting for the bus. |
There's privacy in the public? |

they are everywhere there, and have been ued to find murders, rapists, robbers, etc - without the footage of 'suspects' many crimes would have either been not solved or not solved as quickly are they going to do much? no - but i can't help buy feel its a good thing - you only have something to worry if you're up to no good |
i have a feeling they won't take down the cameras after the olympics are done |
Yeah they say they'll need it for the fireworks in the summer, gay parade etc............ |

that's the typical ignorant response |

http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/11/26/v...buy-sonic-gun/ the reason why they say it's a weapon is because it can make that same feedback noise that a regular bullhorn can, only much much louder ... and the philly police dept used that against protestors at the september g20 summit and now all the civil liberty poeple are up in arms against the LRAD. As for the original topic, you have NO expectation of privacy in a public place. that's the legal opinion anyway. you're out and about so anyone around you can see you. the tricky part comes when people are able to get their hands on these surveillance videos (be it by legal means or otherwise) and post them for everyone else to see. i think the legal opinion would still state that there is no expectation of privacy but you'd be screwed if you wife saw you on the video with your girlfriend. that's when censoring for privacy comes into play. |
these dont phase me, i dont mind seeing more stupid videos get upload onto youtube |
