Looking at s14

I am in the market for a nice s14 to start drifting with. Ive done tons of research on skylines as that was wat i was gonna get, but now i dont have more than 4k to spend on a car. I decided to go with the s14 because its an inexpensive drifter that can still look like a nice, newer car. I did search for this already but didn't really find nething.

The one im looking at right now is a 1995 and seems to be a decent lil car for a good price but im not sure of the lil quircky things that may be wrong with it. Wat type of things go wrong on 240sx or just s14 in general that i can look for?

Sry for the noob post...I just dont want to go in there uneducated and buy a lemon 240....

thx:haha:

Get one with 5lug.
Check for rust.

Pretty much it.
S14's have less problems than S13's since S13's are more common. Everything else is just maintenance stuff.

DON'T GET ONE WITH RUST! Not worth it.
5 Lug is a nice plus. Pay the $500 markup on 5Lug S14's instead of weasting $500 in parts + extra for labour.

S14's are great, especially a S14.5.

But if you're drifting, I'd probably take a 240sx because it's cheaper and parts are pretty east to get for it.

I would be sad to crash a S14 lol.

When are you going to update your journal? It's been so long!

JSALES 01-03-2010 05:39 PM

the S14 you're looking at, is it black with around 170,XXX kms?

Qmx323 01-03-2010 06:08 PM

dude theres a nice 97 red s14 for 4500 on here but its auto :C

GabAlmighty 01-03-2010 06:30 PM

I'd get an S13 and put that extra money into it. But that's just me.

oldsnail 01-03-2010 06:37 PM

i would go for an S14 240sx LE.. bone stock has lsd and 5 lug vs the base 4 lug and no lsd.

i would take the s14 because it is filled with more creature comforts and seems to attract attention as it ages.

not to mention that the s13 has some technology advances that were dropped in the s14. such as 4 wheel steering (hicas ).

the ka24de is a reliable engine from nissan and found in various of vehicles throughout their line up. my folks have an 1996 altima since new and it is still running strong with that engine..

noventa 01-03-2010 07:29 PM

Well, I am on my second s14 both 1995 obd 1 with a standard transmission both bought used. The first one was a stock ka and the one I have now has a microtech sr20. Neither car ever had any mechanical problems or electrical issues. However, on both cars the front windshield moulding were falling off by around 2004. Could be an issue or maybe I have bad luck. On the Ka, I got the classic ticking timing chain or timing chain tensioner problem at around 180,000 km. This is a good car for working on as there is tons of room in the engine bay for you to work around. And the sweetest part of owning this girl is that you do a lot of cheap upgrades thanks to the interchangeability between her and her more powerful siblings such as the GTR, GTi_R, Slivias and 300zx's.

JSALES 01-03-2010 08:01 PM

did the S14 LE and SE come with a sunroof? or was that just the LE?

Qmx323 01-03-2010 09:57 PM

s14 SE doesnt have sunroof just LE

Kilinim 01-03-2010 10:09 PM

If the s14 you're looking at is black, has about 170k, and has lowering springs, don't bother. A buddy of mine already looked at it and it's ok if you want to fix things right away. There's a reason it only costs $4,400. I have an s14 myself and it's a great car. Rust is common on the strut towers so make sure you look at that. Other than that issue, s14's can run forever provided you take care of whatever minimal issues you encounter. Good luck and take your time so you find the right one.

not true

i have a SE and it has a sunroof as well i have a VLSD too stock

main differences from SE to LE

5 lug with 16" wheels.
standard abs
standard fog lights
Leather seats
white face gauges
aero parts

issues i had

fuel pump
timing chain guide rattle

the latter being more a nuisance than a problem, from what i remember it doesn't cause problems but they are recommended to be removed.

i have a 95 engine has less than 170k and is only a bit more than that black one being referred in the thread.

in burnaby?
yea i checked that car out. price reflects condition.
rust starting on front shock towers, don't know about rears. under the body there's some rust. something was ticking in the engine, maybe the timing chain+tensioner like mentioned before.
that car was lowered ridiculously, the front springs are like.. 2in... shocks are probably stock height and blown =S

billboa 01-06-2010 10:58 AM

thx for the comments everybody, going to go look at her this sat and hopefully bring her home with me. Ill make sure to look for the things you guys suggested.

Ya I know a s13 would be a better place to start, but everyone and their sister drifts s13, and you have to deal with rust way more with s13. I wouldn't mind a s13 coupe, but for a decent one seems like I could get a s14 at that price. The one im lookin at right now I think is a SE, but its a pretty good price, and it isn't that black one with 170 km...thk god.

that other black one that "mooman" is selling is im sure way out of my budget and ide hate to practice doing wall taps in that nice of a car:p
