First Fatal Crash of 2010

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Just four days in and Vancouver has already recorded its first traffic-related death of the year.

Police confirm a woman crossing the street at East Hastings and Kootenay this morning was hit by a bus. Officers won't reveal her age or identity and stress the investigation is only in its early stages. They will say the driver of the bus did have a green light while trying to make a left turn when it happened. Eastbound Hastings is still closed to traffic and we'll let you know when it reopens with a traffic alert.

3 biggest threats on the road..

Bicycles, Bus, Pedestrians ! ! Should enforce the law for jaywalkers and bus driver who are abusing "all cars to yield" laws.

I got a couple pics of the scene today at around 8.45 with my cameraphone; I'll upload if I get the chance. Took another 30 minutes to get to work, but RIP lady.

I'm going to say the bus driver is at fault here. The report says he had the green light to go, BUT the traffic light only has 3 lamps (R, Y, G). There is no fourth "turning" lamp. Therefore, the driver is at fault...

I drive by there daily, and I know that if the bus was able to make a U turn, there is NO traffic on the otherside of the street.

Doesnt need a left turn signal for the bus to do the turn, as long as it's clear, the bus is good to go.

Taxis would make up for the final member of Four Horsemen of Traffic.

twitchyzero 01-04-2010 01:47 PM

why's the bus covered? blood?

The article states the bus driver had the green light. I would imagine the women without thinking too deeply on it.

I don't understand this post. What traffic are you mentioning? The bus hit a pedestrian, not another car. For all we know, she could have been running to catch the very same bus that hit her.

Since you do drive, you should know that if you are making a left turn you need to yield to all forms of traffic (including pedestrian).

azncreationz 01-04-2010 02:35 PM

^ exactly what I was thinking. Some people JUST have to catch the bus...don't they realize being late (and catching the next bus) is a better option...than being hit and being injured or possible death!

either way, RIP.

q0192837465 01-04-2010 02:42 PM

hard to say, so ppl like to "catch the light" as well. (ie trying to cross the road at the very last moment)

RIP nonetheless

Chinese reasoning:

It's January the 4th. 1/4
1= Day
4 = Death.

Oh what.
I could also waste my time and unscramble 1/4/2010 into some Chinese superstitious crap, but you get the point.

XtC-604 01-04-2010 02:51 PM

i would rate like this. Taxis, old people/C-lais/mainlanders, buses, retards driving corollas and civics/ neons and the like.

Not really racist! 01-04-2010 03:26 PM

o shit so thats what happened

RIP

Doesn't matter what the lady was try to do, the bus had the green to turn. She can have 100,000 million dollar waiting for her on the other side of the road, she jay walked.

From the last 2 pictures, and since buses only U-turn into the loop from the east boung Hastings, I believe the impact happened on the right hand side of the bus, ON THE MIDDLE LANE of Hastings St East bound. If the lady ran in front of the bus to "catch it", there is no way the bus driver could have seen her simply because the driver was physically not possible.

If the bus driver has the right to left turn AND the time to make it, he/she did nothing wrong short of underestimating the stupidity of human being.

JSALES 01-04-2010 05:27 PM

damn, what a way to start the new year

nonetheless

RIP
