Study: Spanking could have its benefits

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The author of a new study says spanking may be a benefit to your child. But the controversial research has its limitations.

Children between the ages of two and six, who have been spanked tend to do better in school, do more volunteer work, have post-secondary aspirations and are more optimistic. That's according to research from Michigan's Calvin College.

Those spanked between the ages of 7 and 11 tend to be more prone to violence but also scored better on positive measures compared to their non-spanked counterparts.

But the older children get, the more the study discourages the practice - indicating teens who are still being spanked often have clear behavioural problems. The study's author does not want to encourage corporal punishment but discourage those wanting to ban it.

Critics feel spanking is counterproductive, that fear is a poor teacher.

There's a correlation between kids growing up to be more successful and spanking, but I don't necessarily think the success is caused by it (not saying the article says this).

Of course the kids who get spanked are generally going to turn out better, because if their parents are spanking them, then generally they are more strict and more concerned with their children having a better attitude in regards to school, politeness, etc.

Those are my thoughts.

lol, can i not ask the same questions ^^ about the studies that you say put a negative light in spanking?

the average asian is beaten the fukukked up when they're younger.. and the average asian person is pretty well behaved and they go to post secondary school etc.

from my experience and from my experience with my friends who have been beaten, we're doing pretty well.

How else do you discipline your child? talking/yelling at them is futile. I see so many little shits running around during church/mall/public that act retarded in public because they know nothing is going to happen to them. kids aren't stupid, if they do something "bad" and nothing happens but a lecture? why would they care?

My parents used to lay the smackdown on me when I was younger. I turned out good. My brother on the otherhand barely ever got beat and ended up witha criminal record and on probation and my mom was like why didn't u talk toyour brother and teach him to be good, I was like WTF u need to beat the shit outta him so he'll learn
