I've picked up people a few times. Once it was this old man who reminded me of my Grandpa hitchhiking in a residential neighbourhood. I drove him around for a bit then realized he didn't know where he was going. He didn't know his address, phone number and he didn't have any ID. I ended up driving him to the Police Station it was obvious he has some sort of dementia or Alzheimers. I felt really bad for him but I'm glad I stopped because he looked like he had been walking around for a while.
I've also picked someone up on the highway who's car broke down. Then there was this lady downtown who approached me when it was raining and asked if I could please give her a ride 4 blocks to her office. It feels good to do things for other people but I can understand the dangers. I wouldn't give someone a ride if I had my son with me.

everytime i encounter 1 it would be a group of girls trying to hitch a ride to a downtown club..
i roll my windows and talk to them for a bit, make it seem like i would give them a ride and ask what i would get in return
then they tell me that they'll let me party with them and i can tell theyre bs'ing cuz they can clearly see that im still on my dirty work clothes..in the end i end up driving away myself  | |

^ My dad used to back in tha day (80s) until he picked up some white chick who also asked him for $2 for coffee. When he refused, she threatened to report him to the police for raping her.  No joke.
Other than 1 other time (90s) where we gave someone with a snowboard a lift up Mt. Seymour, I don't think anyone in the family has done it.
Blame the ppl who f*ck it up for everyone. Kind of like bums who sue after getting "bad" free food.

My mom told me a story when she hitch hiked when she was young (late 60's) she got a ride from some guy who took her in the middle of a field, she said she has never been scared in her life. She ended up yelling and screaming at the guy and he took her home but she honestly thought she was going to get raped or killed. After that she only hitch hiked with a friends and never alone.

The one time I ever gave someone a ride was at the Aquarium, and it was closing time so I went outside. And there was this cute Japanese girl standing alone. My friends all departed for home and I saw she was still there. You could tell she wasn't from around here. So I asked her if she was waiting for someone, and I found out she was here for home stay and that the family here were supposed to pick her up at the Aquarium. So I lent her my phone and she called the family, they lived in North Burnaby, and the family completely forgot she was arriving today, they thought it was tomorrow. So I offered to give her a ride to the family's house since it would take forever for them to come pick her up. After dropping her off at the house in Burnaby, she asked for my address. I gave her my work address (just in case). Fast forward about 4 months ahead, I received a letter from her from Japan saying how she and her family were grateful for my help and if I ever wanted to visit Japan I'd have a place to stay.
But after all these stories I've heard recently, I doubt I'd offer a ride to anyone else.

that'll be so cool though, knowing that there will always be a place to stay on the other side of the world
someone i know, shes a writer and she travels around alot now
she worked at some starbucks place in london where alot of international students come to work part time while studying on their student visas..she met alot of people from around the world and now wherever she goes, she has a place to stay (well most) for example, hawaii, japan, korea, hong kong, italy etc

I have a number of friends that do regularly, so I pick them up whenever I see them.
Other than that, it's super rare. Sometimes when they don't look sketchy. Always turned out well, sometimes ended up in some dates or free stuff.
